One more HK Y650 Scorpion ready to go to air ( at least I think so! )

Hello all!  ::)

This is my first post in this forum, and also my first multicopter build!  :o

I';ve decided this journey hoping to reach FPV and Air Photography soon, but so far is only built to fly and to see how I can handle it.

My setup is:

- HobbyKing Y650 Scorpion Frame;
- 6x Turnigy Multistar MT2213-935Kv motors + 10x4.5 Multistar props;
- 6x Turnigy TY-P1 25AMP HexFET ESC';s;
- 1x Turnigy Hardcase Lipo 6600mAh;
- HK Multiwii Pro + GPS + Bluetooth;
- Home made Power distribution cables ready to go for 2 packs in Paralell (HXT-4mm batery 10AWG cable --- XT60 + 12AWG cable ESC side);
- Futaba 9C (My hold Budy  :evil ) + FRSKY Module + D8R-II Plus Receiver ( telemetry );

After a lot of ecalc, I opted to this motor setup. It seemed to me a good balance.

In test Bench, this motor + prop + ESC + 3S1P batery gave me 700Gr Static thrust in my scale.
I';ve reached this with 11Amp current running to ESC measured with a home made current sensor with a Shunt resistor of 0.01ohm 3% from ohmite (available at mouser).

With 4S, I';ve reached the same thrust with only 8Amps. The throthle stick was about 65% position.

Based on this, I';ve cutted the motors power in multiwii by setting the Maxpower to 1700. This way I avoid to stress the motors, has this setup is over proped for a 4S system.

With this, the scorpion is taking off at about 50% stick.

The total model weight at this time is 2450gr.

I';ve only tested it inside home yet, but I hope I go outdoors this weekend to really lift it well over the floor to get rid of turbelence and be able to trim it if needed.

But at least, it';s flying! :D

I';ll post a few pictures and videos of bench testing.

Regarding telemetry, there is a lot to do, and it';s still no clear to me how to set it up using multiwii.
What sensor are you using for lipo cell monitoring with multiwii? And for current and voltage?

well, enought for now.

I hope it flyes well in the weekend.  ~~

Cheers

Testing!

The frame:

Power distribution finished:

and installed:

Final mount without props:

Video bench test with prop monted normally in DJI slot. For reference, each 10mV represents 1A current in circuit:

Video bench test with prop reversed to use in motors facing down. No performance lost.

After reading about pitch problems when yawing, I';ve inverted the rear motors. I';ll fly with Y6B motor setup.

The test done today was already in this mode, and lifted well.

Humm what';s wrong, why pictures don';t show up?

I';ve used links to my gmail photo bucket.

What I';ve done wrong? :D

Your image host wants a password.  That is why they are not showing.  I would like to see the pictures as I have a Y650 on the bench ready to assemble now. I have just received all of the guts from RCTimer yesterday and I';m just trying to find the time to get started.

Hi Gerry!

I';ve asked a coleague to test, and his opening normally. Can you test again please?

Anyway, I';ll try to use the method posted by HobbyWOW. I just have to download the pictures first.

Joao

Lo guys.

Well, went out today for flying, and it DID fly! :D

After a few broken props still in ground, I believe because threadlock in the screw spread to the prop hub, it went high in the sky very well.

I think I';ll have to adjust PID for roll. When I apply roll, it shakes a bit. It was a bit windy, but it only happens with roll.

I ended with a crash, just because the esc';s cut the power because low battery.

I had the alarm installed in the monitor cable of the batery. When it started beeping, I';ve started to bring it back to me. But after 30 secs or so, it cuted the motors power, causing a final crash that cost be 2 broken props and a bronken down plate. Batery was ripped out of the frame also, but since it';s hardcase, it doesn';t show any damage.

I';ve configured the ESC';s to cut low, but I don';t have an option "no cut". If I put Simonk on them, how will this behave? Is simonk configurable?

For now, I';ll buy another frame for spares, and a telemetry voltage and current monitor plus the batery cell monitor also to use with my telemetry.

But, after all, this frame is amazing and flew very well!  :beer2:

Good show alvesjc, glad you got her in the air, without too much damage.  Yes, SimonK is pretty much stripped bare so to speak, purposely for multirotors, none of that braking and cut-off stuff.
They';re even saying that Afro';s need no calibration now, which is good, saves time and fuss.  These things do change with new advances, old ways become redundant, like defragging HD';s and double de-clutching!

N.B for you';s youngsters: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_clutch_(technique)

Embrace the new.   :smiley:

You really shouldnt fly with esc';s that are set to cut the power flash them with simonk and forget having to set them simonk is written for optimum performance for multirotors  ~~

Well, learned that the hard way...   :angry:

Gladly, I';ve remembered to set it to low, otherwise I could crash really bad early. I went over 30 meters in the air.... It crashed at about 8 meters high....

I';ll flash them with simonk, and order a new frame for spares.  :notworthy:

About PID';s,. I';ve started to lower the P setting, from 3.3 to 3.2. But no visible change in it';s behaviour.

Can someone point me a good reading about PID';s ?

Thanks lads.

Joao

Hi.

I';ve the new frame on the way, but this crash still bugs me.

For what I';ve been reading, ESC';s low setting is at least 2.8V. My lipo alarm fires at 3.3V. This one.

https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__18987__On_Board_Lipoly_Low_Voltage_Alarm_2s_4s_.html

I really can';t understand why the ESC'; slowed down the motors, I had plenty of room to bring the Y6 down safely.

I can';t find anything saying what is the low voltage threshold of my ESC';s, but everything I find in the net about others state 2.6 or 2.8V per cell.

My ESC is the  turnigy TY-P1 25Amp.

Anyone able to confirm the LVT of this ESC?

Thank you.

Best regards,

Joao
