Update

I';ve pretty much got everything and i am well on the way to having this built.  But i';m happy to build it, take it to bits, build it, take it to bits until i have things looking pretty good!

I fried the first PDB with integrated BEC the second i plugged the 4S into it, so i chucke it for a much simpler and more robust design!

I have dropped the camera rails down 15mm to allow space for the PDB

I';m now waiting for nice soft silicone extensions for the ESC cables.  The ones i got locally were way to stiff and i thought they would transfer to many vibes to the Fixhawk

I';ve got the OSD and Camera switcher mounted right next to each other, they are stuck on the underside of the top board.

I';ve changed the motor mounts to the 680pro mounts making the 690 a 782mm hex.  The rctimer 40a ESCs fit nicely in the bottom of the motor mount

I';ve got a GPS antenna mount that clamps in the 16mm tubes I may or may not use it.  If i wanted to add it later i would have to desolder to fit it.
My GPS is stuck on the top of the Canopy

I need a Dual Output BEC, one for 12v for the 5v, save powering everything off the current sensor

Purchased So Far
The Tarot Frame FY690s
RCTimer Fixhawk, 433MHz Telemetry, GPS and Compass, USB and LED extension, Current Sensor & MAVLINK OSD
6 HP4108-720KV (24N22P) Multicopter Brushless Motor
6 Multicopter SimonK Speed Controller ESC HVSK-40A (OPTO)
a set of tarot retracts
TS-832 VTX
The longer 680Pro Motor mounts so i can fit the ESCs on the bottom, it also takes the quad from being 690mm to about 720mm
a Frsky X8r which will be on the opposite leg from the VTX
A Sony 1200TVL FPV Camera
Tarot underslung battery mount
200a pdb
Tarot hood for 680s
Stormbgc - on route with BT and 2nd IMU
Rctimer 3axis gimbal - on route

Be careful with your motor choice when running SimonK ESCs such as Afros. Pancake type motors can loose sync and it doesn';t always manifest itself in ground tests.

Fletch

Handy to know .... Which motor and ESC combo would you guys recommend?

redford

I';m running Sunnysky X3508 580Kv, 30a Afro SimonK and 1355 direct mount carbon props.

Fletch

Sounds good to me ... I think I';ll give them a bash ...

I';d read already they were quite good

Fletch

What about the RCTimer 720KV motors that Peter king uses?

He also uses slim afro ESCs (I';ve got the normal ones but they are the same thing)??

Cheers

Fletch

Arrived today and I';ve built the frame up already!

so what motors are you going for then?
Are you mounting the ESC';s on the end of the arms?

I think im going to do a hex build like this

I';ve got 30a Afros ESCs at the moment ... They don';t sit well on the arm ends.

I have put them up for sale and if they sell I will buy the afro slims put on the bigger wires on them and try them inside the arm tubes.
If they don';t I';ll bung them on the bottom plate.

I think I';m going to go with the RCTimer HP4108 motors ....

The other thing I did today was use some silicone tubing made for car coolant hoses on the horizontal leg section .... fits perfectly but not sure what kind of strength its going to add.  I know these 10mm tubes need strengthen as one of mine came out the box split!

Just be careful with the wiring of these from the arms to the power - make sure you route them carefully  - or leave enough slack - so that you can still fold the arms in-out.  (like I didnt!  :slap: )

So i';m gonna start driveling on here (probably just to myself) about my thoughts on what i am going to do with my Hex

I';m going to extend the rails underneath so i can (eventually) mount a gimbal out between the two front arms
http://www.easycomposites.co.uk/products/carbon-fibre-rod/10mm-carbon-fibre-rod-1m.aspx

I am going to under-sling my battery off the 10mm rails, hopefully be able to offset the gimbal weight when its out front
http://www.tarot-rc.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65_70&products_id=198

I';m looking for spacers to move the mount rails down slightly so i can mount the distribution board under the bottom plate and have the cables neatly run up through the hole and out through the arms
http://www.myrcmodel.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=4226

I';m going to add the modded lock for the legs
http://www.tarot-rc.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65_70&products_id=1047
http://www.tarot-rc.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65_70&products_id=1048

I';m going to use the longer mounts so i can put the ESCs under the motors

Like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGh_STaYyUU
However if this fails .... http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:261686

Pixhawk mount on the top plate
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:163472

One of these on each leg for mounts for some of the extra kit that will need mounted
http://www.tarot-rc.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65_70&products_id=1030

I really want one of these
http://www.cnchelicopter.com/servlet/the-2598/%28New%29-Tarot-5D2-Full/Detail
But its just silly!!

ashutchy

Some great ideas there Ewan, I like your thinking. Especially liking the locked legs mod as I';m not totally happy with the standard setup sold with the FY680. Cheers for pointing those out.

The rods you mention are just that, solid CF rods. Are these what you';re looking to use or do you need CF tubes? Either would do I suppose but the rods might be a little heavier and a touch more expensive.

Hope you';ve been getting some flying in recently and not all work work work? ;)

Andy.

I';ve had the 450 out everyday ....
i need to get time to balance the new CF props and get them on then get over my fears of PID tuning!!

Having had 10mm rod in Fibreglass in my had today i';m not really worried about the weight of the CF

Some nice wire wrap aswell to keep the servo cables tidy ... Wee jock flag effect going on there!!

So I';m looking for a power distribution board and BEC that I also plug all the ESC signal wires into and that come out in a loom

Like this board but with an integrated BEC...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00KCQVIAS/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_9Y12tb1KE7ET4V33

I';ve settled on this one for the time being as I know I can loom the signal cables up really easily

Hi Ewan. Have you ordered your leg lock parts yet? I';ve managed to find a UK supplier for them and at a reasonable price too.

I';ve not bought them yet or ordered from him before so let me know how you get on please mate. ;) ~~

i don;t think the legs are gonna work ... a quick glance this afternoon when they arrived and they are quite different!

Fletch

So the mounts are quite different .... I!m just gonna bung a black tywrap round them to stop them folding up

Rather than doing the carbon board very near the edge

Sounds like a plan mate and should do at least for now. Are you gonna keep them like that long term or look at other options?

Depends what I do with the camera options...  Initially a go pro so the stock one will be good

Fletch

Mounted the power distribution board...  It';s almost like it was made for this hex.

You can see the BEC pins sit nicely on the gaps on the frame and all the main pads are unobstructed

The only thing I did was rather that use the pcb plugs that were supplied to make the BEC removable I soldered them directly to the board....  I wouldn';t have wanted them to fall off mid flight and you would lose your 5v or 10v rails
