Chaps!

It';s as much an exercise in 2D design as a serious attempt to rival the stables of QAV & Blackout etc, but I have had massive fun in designing this little beast.  Hopefully I have captured the essence of what is required here, basically a semi coffin shaped 3 layer cake, separated by 6 stand-offs, a tried and tested format I think.
You';ll also notice the absence of a ';clean'; area for the now obligatory Mobius cam, I simply haven';t got around to it yet.
Getting the size about right is the real challenge, although it';s fairly easy to resize stuff if truth be told.
I have the advantage of working in an educational environment, and as a perk, get to use all the toys therein.  My favourite article (apart from the lathe of course, who wouldn';t want to own a lathe?) is a Denford laser cutter, which will burn its way through a myriad of material with stunning accuracy.  Anyhow, unfortunately it is not powerful enough to really penetrate all the substrates of a piece of carbon fibre, but it';ll go thru ply like a knife through butter.  So, I plan to build a prototype in 4mm ply, just to see what it looks like, then make any adjustments as required before burning the outline in G10, as it will penetrate to the cloth at least.  Then I';ll either cut it out with my micro router, or hand over some readies for somebody else to do it!
As I say, the frame is made up of a bottom plate which is home to the FC, Lipo & ESC';s, with bolt on arms which are sandwiched between the bottom two plates, with the top plate being for the fpv gear & camera(s)
Hope you guys like the look of it, any comments would be welcomed.
BTW, the name just came off the top of my head, seems there are a couple of others out there with same name, but not seemingly in production.

Oh yes, our latest acquisition is a Dye Sublimation printer, so once the frame is out there, I may add some graphics too!  Luvvly.  ::)
Oh, and lights of course, all the stuff I swore I';d never use  :whistling:

Cheers

A couple of mods..

When I resized/rescaled the original drawing, I unwittingly scaled down the motor holes as well!  I';ve amended the arms now, plus added a couple of weight reducing holes to boot.

Oh, and I';ve just found these great little dist boards from HK http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__55556__Quanum_Power_Distribution_Board_and_Dual_UBEC_In_One.html?utm_campaign=020714.UK&utm_content=659921809&utm_medium=email&utm_source=EDM
I';ve already added the 4 x 3 mm mount holes on the bottom plate!

They look the dog';s, so I';ve ordered two!
You gotta move quick in this hobby, I tell ya!

A.

Edit: Now the ';clean'; plate is there!

Andy,

I was going to do you a 3D mock up but your 250 quad is only 200. I can scale the drawing to the dimensions on the drawing but the
arms aren';t long enough.  like I said they only measure 200 when assembled. You will not get 6" props on it, no way. (not as it is)

Ooh eck!  Hm, that drawing is not to scale, but the dimensions are.  It did check out before, so what I';ll do is ';assemble'; it, then check prop rotations for clearance.

But, hey Rich, that';s great, and thanks for the input, it';s really appreciated, I';m very newe to this CAD stuff (like day before yesterday).  My next task was to fire up pro desktop and see if I could import it, but hey, if you can do it?

Probably why some of the holes are distorted as well. Don';t let me interfere with your learning curve! I';m ok with the 2D stuff, I could be about half way round my 3D learning curve. The best and easiest program I have ever used for 2D vector design is CorelDraw, I have used it for all sorts of things from writing letters to vinyl lettering vans. Ideal for sublimation printing and laser cutting. And good for designing quads as well.
I do industrial engraving, usually switch panels, lettering and cutting holes of various shapes. The machine I use for this work has some brilliant 3D software which I am still learning. The more I use it the more I learn. But it';s a long process.

A nice design there Andy, looking nicely aggressive. In CF could be quite a beast ;)

Absolutely love that PDB, how very awesome. What a find. When I get back i';m going to grab a few. They';re going to vastly simplify builds.

Ok, thanks to Richard, I think I';ve fixed the issue.  It was as I thought, when I resized the whole thing, the arms got got distorted (or something!)  I';ve gone back in and redrawn the arms, and the mount holes.  It is a learning curve to be sure.  I started off quite well, and theorised that if I wanted a symmetrical design, it would be best to draw one quarter, then copy and paste the other three.  That worked well, but of course things changed after I discovered the quad was too big!

It';s quite hard to actually visualise the real size and scale in the virtual domain, I';m much more used to cutting bits of wood out, drawing the thing by hand with a pencil & ruler!
Anyhow, I must master the technology.
I';m sure there are much easier ways of using this program (Techsoft 2D Design) but as long as I can get something out before they close the place up for summer next week I';ll be happy.

So, here';s the latest plan:

Hi Andy,
Yes, that looks better. Although, there are still a few symmetry issues.
Could you send me a dxf file or an eps file. Then I won';t have to digitise the job.
Will be much quicker!
I think the best way to start a new multi design is to draw a perfect square, say 250 X 250 and
Then put a circle representing your prop diameter on each corner, that is the cot sorted, then just
Work from there. But I';m no expert, what do I know?
I';m 90% done building from scratch my 250 quad and its looking really good. I would like to shave
a few grams off its final weight, I';ve had it hovering and am quite pleased with it.

Well, thanks to the kind and encouraging assistance of Richard, We now have a 3D model of what she looks like currently.
Such is the nature of design, this 3D sketch-up is already outdated!  I have reconsidered a few key points, and will attempt to implement them later today.

Hope you like the look of it so far!

The main mod I';ll make is with the bottom plate, as I missed a trick with the ESC/PDB mounting possibilities.  This in turn may give me a chance to introduce some rubber to the arm mounts/spacers etc, to further lessen the transmission of vibration through the body as it stings it';s path through the air!

Luvving it so far tho!!

Very nice.  That looks like the biz actually, thanks for sharing.  I really haven';t had a lot of time to muse these fine details, just really the size/shape of the beast.  I hadn';t even considered what length to have the standoffs ';till Rich asked me!

I';m looking forward to getting it out in perspex, and to have it in front of me, on the desk, only then do you really know if you';ve got a plan, or an ornamental paperweight!

I suppose there are limited options with shape with a quad, if you want a high degree of efficiency and speed/maneuverability in your final product.  I think nature can tell us a lot, about scale, and dimension though.
It can also tell us that the humble bumble can indeed fly, in direct contradiction to all the scientific theory to the contrary!

They figured that one out a while ago now;

http://www.livescience.com/33075-how-bees-fly.html

TL:DR - if you model bumble bees like conventional aircraft scaled down they don';t work. If you take into account the viscosity of air on the smaller scale they work fine. Think of them as swimming through treacle rather than flying through air and you';ll get the right idea.
One circlip short of a quadcopter.
1 lobe short of an antenna.

Also the flight muscles of bumblebees  behave differently.to.other types.of.muscle, they sort of vibrate rather than twitch (most muscles in nature are either fast.or slow twitch)

After some collaboration with that excellent fellow Richard ( richardg6paj) I can now happily release the first pic of the Wasp!

It';s only an arm, but the rest of it';s body is still being liberated from the plywood by Dr Frankenstein';s laser cutter as I write.

I thought I';d show you the finished prototype, now cut from 4mm mdf.  It has a nice look and feel to it, somewhat reminiscent of a child';s jigsaw puzzle ATM, but I';m imagining it hewn from some 24k carbon fiber, mmmm sweet!  ::)

There';s more...

The frame looks bigger than I imagined (probably because of the chunky material it';s cut from), wider maybe, but that';s because it needs to accommodate the Zippy Compact 1800mAh 3 cell lipo, which will slot in from the back, between the standoffs.

The arms are designed to take 6x4 APC props too, which give longer flight times than standard 5x4';s, although I guess with a 250 that';s not massively important (as a crash is likely before that time has elapsed!) but I would like the potential to be in the air longer than 5 mins.

I can';t do much more ATM, as I really need to assembly all the hardware for a first fit, just to see how things fit & balance, before pulling the trigger on a full carbon cut!
I';ve ordered up one of those Foxtech 32 ch 5.8 super mini Vtx (compatible with FS/Immersion), so am looking forward to trying that out, especially as it only cost £20 odd, although, TBH, the frame looks big enough to accommodate a full size vtx.

Hasta manana muchachos!

Edit: Actually, when I say ';finished'; prototype, I should say ';first'; really, as we';ve already modded some of the holes (which are too large) but I';d already cut it before I realised!

All fun and games.

Awesome looking design and I like how you have incorporated the battery to fit inside the frame. I find with all these mini';s that its a shame that the centre of the middle plate is taken over by the FC when it would be the perfect place for the battery to get good CG on all 3 axis. My last design of the MiniJAB placed the FC under the centre plate but the knock on effect of that was both top and middle plates still sat higher but the battery still sat lower than if it was on top (if that makes sense).

This is looking a professional job and look forward to seeing your first flights with it  ~~
