I hate things that run off bands... they inevitably stretch or wear and start slipping sooner or later. It';s a brilliant piece of equipment but I reckon in the long run it would be less reliable than a basic quad. Bit like an F1 car... they go through an engine every race... not practical for the daily commute!

Biffa

Lovely piece of out of the box engineering.

All my larger helicopters have had belt driven tails and I have never had an issue, I don';t see why this quad would be less reliable. One motor and one ESC running a constant head speed, sounds good to me.

Not recommended for those who have orientation issues  ::)  ::)  ::)

Be good to fpv it. Flying upside down through some tight gaps. Would last 1 flight with me at the sticks

dp106

I thought it might be reasonably priced as you only have 1 esc and motor... Nope $600  :blink

(Before anyone points it out to me I realise its very specialist and they have to re-coop their development costs its just more than I want to spend on another quad)

The swash plates (I think thats the correct term) look fairly simple affair though? Less complicated than I';ve seen on RC Helicopters?

FlyinMarty

Yeah, the swashes are essentially helicopter tail pitch sliders rather than the three servo swash plates you get on a heli main rotor.

@Biffa, it may well be fine. I suppose it isn';t dragging much in the way of load. My problematic experiences of belt driven things are all non RC stuff.

Cloudbuster

absolute bargain i reckon at that price !!! and a very very clever solution !!! what a clever man as a manufacturer myself i have maximum respect for the time patience and money that this man has invested into this project. remember folks without people like this you would all be still playing with paper aeroplanes !!!

Would the controls of this be the same as for a normal quad or would you have to learn how to fly again? I have never touched a heli so have no idea.

I guess there must be a switch that inverts the pitch so you can fly upside down but it is just like flying the right way up?

ice.

xxpitt

Controls would be the same except trottle idle would be at 50%.... so when inverted you put throttle bellow mid stick to stay in the air and not fly into the ground. You aren';t actually controlling throttle just pitch of the blades. So 50% would be neutral pitch above 50 positive pitch and bellow 50 negative pitch. Other than that it would fly the same. Take a bit of getting used to mind

xxpitt

Thats just a guess by the way.

As for it being inverted controls would be slightly opposite it would still roll left and right the same. Bit if u was inverted and pushed elevator forward for nose down. The nose would actually lift up...

This is also just a guess

Biffa

Spot on.  It does fly exactly the same as a collective pitch helicopter.

Thanks for the info - I don';t think it would take that much getting used to.

I fly my quad inverted when I want to bring it back to ground quickly so am used to the controls being inverted in that sense. However, it is alot of money to crash into the ground whilst convincing myself it isn';t that hard!

Cheers
