Hi all,
I`m a 55 year old guy from Kent, UK.  I have been building and flying rc gliders on and off for 30 years. I am now looking to move into FPV for video capture and freestyle flying.
I recently bought a Potensic Atom drone, true 4k with 3 Axis gimble and 3 batteries, for the price and as a first drone I am quite impressed BUT now i have the bug want to progress.
I have installed `liftoff` on my linux pc and tomorrow I should have the dongle delivered and be able to connect my Spektrum DX6 for some needed training and practice.

I am someone that would prefer to save, wait and buy decent and upgradeable gear with that being said any advice on radios, goggles,  5" quads and anything else relatable I`m all ears.
Do I start with an off the shelf quad or do I build from scratch? Any and all advice greatly received and much appreciated..

Hello Heath and Welcome,

Whereabouts in Kent are you?

Bad Raven

As a general rule, in recent times its been cheaper as well as easier to buy a plug n play or a bind n fly, as the assemblers are buying in bulk or making themselves, and you won't compete, especially when you might have to buy from several places and incur several shipping costs.

You will however find that Spektrum radio is very poorly supported/provided for within the PNP/BNF quadcopter arena. The current goto radio RF format is ELRS, with an ever widening supply and good development going on. Transmitters will use OpenTX or EdgeTX operating systems.  All these are open source.

Radiomaster is the current radio sales champion, and for good reason.

You can buy freestyle quadcopters without a Rx, but ideally then need a serial Rx, an area that Spektrum has trailed behind the market for years.

Hi Bad Raven thanks for replying,
I`m in East Peckham.
So far i`m thinking sell my spektrum DX6 and DX6i and buy the radiomaster TX16s which if i`m correct its multi-protocol so will work with my orange and spektrum receivers on my gliders. Digital or analogue? DJI or other? goggles? This is where it gets very confusing already lol...

I am looking for distance as enjoy coast and cliff photography/video... I think I`ve set my mind on a 5".. So my plan of action is to buy the new radio and get started on the simulator while researching what setup drone-wise is suitable for me.. There are so many 5" FPV quads to choose from :o . I would probably use a gopro for footage and would also like RTH gps too.. thats as far as I`ve got so far  :D
