Avata in stock in UK

SO, DJI's ducted prop Avata has hit the UK, HobbyRC stating stocks.

Two packages, one with the new Goggles 2 @ £1229 (Pro View Combo), and the other with the existing Goggles V2 @ £989 (Fly Smart Combo).

Both have only motion controller, not RC type.

Both Goggles are supplied with the same battery as always.

Pictures:-

The Game Controller type twin stick Tx is a further £140 and is not compatible with Vista/Air Unit. The Avata is not compatible with Goggles V1 as it uses the DJI FPV mode only introduced with the V2s.

Note encapsulated (and dedicated) flight battery. Seemingly NOT yet available as cannot find listed at HobbyRC!

SO, there's the DJI Avata (ducted quad) and there's the Walksnail Avatar (complete system and/or Goggles)...............

Ern Stock

Rather tempted.
Could any one confirm that in manual mode ( with sticks tx,or ' remote controller ' ) flight / control experience would be similar to betaflight acro/ rate / manual whatever it was/is called.
Have had to relearn crappy auto level flight after going down the route of dji mini 2 ( fantastic kit though ) , but sorely miss fpv but not the trashy vtx I was used to , nor the endless faffing of self builds.
Spending £1600 seems such a good idea. !
But could  , I believe get similar recorded video to mini 2.
Anyways , if anyone can understand what I'm on about please do comment.
World seems to be split between betaflight & dji with little comparison of flying styles.

Ern Stock

Thanks.
Yeah , feels lazy option !
Though , just looked and last bought fpv goggles in April 2015 ... so due an upgrade. (Dom v2)

I bought DJI Goggles V2 and a load of Vista thinking I'd probably regret it, and I haven't. After delivered first goggles were faulty, the replacements have been truly excellent.

I still do fly Analogue, but rarely now, still using dual receiver dual diversity Eachine 200D's with a pair of Patch and a pair of Pagoda. Minimal flicker only when trees wet.

Of the more recent HD contenders, the one to watch AFAICS is the upcoming HDZero goggles. Expensive at £600-£650ish and not around till end year earliest, but another £60 gets dual use analogue as well.  I may go this route in the future, especially to get micro quads on HD, which DJI singularly fails to offer, but for now I'm likely to buy another Goggles V2 so a failure of one does not ground me, and future proof all teh Vistas, etc.

Ern Stock

Ah , now , this is the chat I was after !
Though don't know what the vista is - camera , vtx , or combo ? Presumably allows self-builds to fly with your own tx and craft , but with dji goggles and vtx. ?
I do feel a bit weary of self builds now.
For a camera platform , the dji mini 2 has outperformed anything I ever built 10x over. ( except maybe sports drone with insta360)
Which drags me towards the avata , as a fpv rig.
I do understand there seems to be some yaw-wash issues - and the general tune-ability would be less.
Would satisfy my desire for manual fpv ( cinewhoop style , I never was one for flips n rolls ) , and get me hd. Have only ever used ye olde dom v2 .
Presumably the feed to the goggles would be as good as the feed to the screen from the mini 2 ? Or there abouts  ?
Am off to research possible similar options other than avata .
Starting with "Walksnail Avatar" that you mention.
Though I do lean toward dji avata as is sort of ready-compliant for commercial work.
Ah , spent so many years thinking of dji as the devil's work

Vista is the DJI reciever/DJI HD Video combined unit, the smallest (though not small and certainly not Whoop practical. The other one is the "Air Unit" which also has a SD.  Both sold with various cameras, I always pick the JI camers for the Air Unit, The Nebula Pro for the Vista.

I did not refer to Walksnail Avatar as a video option at this stage, HDZero is IMO the likely one. There is a LOT of confusion as to which is which!!

You have referred a couple of times to "self builds", but the component shortage has as good as wiped out ANY reason to build yourself currently.  BNF, etc  clearly the way to go if there's one that closely matches your requirement, as their bulk buys makes the price lower AND wipes out the stocks to buy bits!

Last two I bought were the iFlight Nazgul Evoque (DJI HD, FrSky) and the GEPRC Mk5 (DJI HD, ELRS). Despite the price, the Mk5 is SO good that even attempting a build, being forced to chase around for bits, pay separate shippings/postages, wait, etc getting the excellent Mk5 was a no-brainer.

Ern Stock

Thanks top advice .
So...
Am I right ? :
Dji goggles only receive from  dji craft or dji vtx/cam units.?
There are other ( non dji ) craft available (some  as listed by yourself ) that are bnf and fitted with with dji vtx ?

Fatshark/walksnail or Hdzero    are conceptually the same as my old analog goggles - & work with any suitable (hd ) vtx and betaflight osd.
Again , ready-built craft are available / better option. ?

The big stumbling block for me is that I stuck with spektrum.
Looks like I may have to move up to taranis/ frsky or ? ? ? to take advantage of ready-built .
Spektrum rssi was always iffy.
Today dragged out the last ready-built I bought , eachine uz65, and having (analog ! ) fun with it . ( as ever batteries never good enough ! )

Or ...............
On hobbyrc,
The ready built dji hd craft can use a dji tx.
ie
iFlight Alpha A75 DJI HD Whoop (PNP)
Less choice of (non dji ) craft with dji hd , but are available and may well bind with a dji tx ( though betting this is can of worms ! )
Edit / correction !
But read listing wrong - item comes with no rx ,
Only thing I know for sure  is that I've saved a lot of money being out the loop for a while !

Bad Raven

An Alpha A75 HD bought by me had to be returned as the FC would not communicate with either FrSky or ELRS. The seller could not make it connect either and refunded.

Alpha A75 HD has a Vista so will communicate with Goggles V1, Goggles V2, and the DJI Transmitter.

HD formats are NOT compatible with each other (or Analogue without additional hardware), DJI, Walksnail, and HDZero do NOT work together.

Ern Stock

One more if I may
Am used to having a tx and a rx for control , and a vtx and vrx for video feed.
Does dji have a different technique ? Do they have vtx and vrx and somehow have the control rx combined in with the vtx. ?
Thanks

Bad Raven

Vista and Air Unit are a 2.4GHz receiver for control radio IF using the DJI Transmitter (and nothing else!), and a 5.8Gz transmitter for video in the same case. If you use other control radio the quad/flight controller needs that UART or SBus connection to a receiver of the right radio make.

The DJI video signal is in the same band as analogue, but is NOT same format nor compatible.

Ern Stock

There you go ! That's the bit that confused.
Thanks very much for enlightening me.
So it's case of getting used to the creepy little dji fpv tx , then it's simpler .

Hmmm . Further research suggests that the newer & smaller goggles 2 do not currently connect with the vista vtx.
So ( if stocks become available ) avata might be better bought with the goggles v2 rather than the goggles 2.

Or ......... buy set of goggles v2 ( like you have bad raven ? ) and something like a holybro kopis ( cinewhoop ) or a tiny whoop - Thinking p16 for example.
Would then need a dji tx , wonder what choice there is for a dji tx that would work with goggles v2 and vista , and preferably avata , other than the PlayStation type.

Just for my sanity :
Dji goggles :
V1 digital  ( large , single band , connects to vista )
V2 digital ( large , dual band ,  connects to vista )
2 digital. ( smaller , doesn't connect to vista )
Is that right ?
Ta.

Bad Raven

CURRENTLY.............Yes.

It is alleged "by insiders" that DJI are working on making the Goggles 2 compatible.

Suggest you watch Bardwell's and Mad Angler's videos on Goggles 2, they have issues wider than compatibility, such as likely can't wear glasses, no de-fogging, some people finding their eyelashes hit the screens.

There is a "conventional" DJI FPV Transmitter.

SO, HDZero goggles are lurching ever nearer to release.

Currently you can buy a quite ugly add on unit to stick (literally) to the front of existing analogue goggles if they offer HDMI input and a decent enough resolution. An increasing range of VTX are now available and the list is growing, including that needed but not supplied Whoop/Toothpick sized unit NOT available with DJI format. It is now fairly cheap though!

The whoop HDZero unit is approaching £100, so I'm not about to splash it over every Tiny Whoop I own as I'd be up for near £2k spend plus the near £700 for the goggles.

Ern Stock

Thanks for continued input.
If I go for the avata will now go for the bigger / vista-compatible v2 goggles - could then it seems fly non-dji cinewhoop if I wished.
Would also need a transmitter - will research the odds between the grey tx and the one you show .
Have loads of questions about the dji video system but will save them for if I buy.

The HDzero module looks good - £165 , + £96 for whoop vtx & camera bundle. My dom v2 do have a hdmi input , but concerned that they may not have 'decent enough resolution' ;

Display
600 X 480 VGA (922k pixels) stripe pattern LCD
NTCS/PAL auto selecting

hdmi supports
720 x 480

Yes , have watched enough YouTube vids to confuse me - quite a few channels are good , quite a few not-so-good.
Presume you mean mad techs not mad angler ?

Ern Stock

Holy moly.
Research seems to suggest that ;
the grey PlayStation-type tx only works with the dji fpv or avata
the black tx you picture only works with air / vista

Really like the in-flight camera settings options with dji ( it satisfies film-makers' need to seem important ) .
Suppose I could get the grey tx so I can fly avata in manual , then add spektrum receivers to any other craft I get that are fitted with vista.
Seems there isn't even a throttle curve available on dji tx.

One persons experience of Goggles 2......................

" I've been playing with the DJI Avata and Goggles 2 now for a few weeks. I also have the Goggles V2 and was originally super excited to see the new version with better screens and a smaller size. I've been pretty disappointed so far. I get that some of these issues I'll discuss are specific to my face and others may not have the same experience so let me know your thoughts.

I'll start with the name. Never before has a product been so confusing to people. We have the DJI Goggles V2 and the DJI Goggles 2 and they get mixed up all the time. They should have come up with a better name to differentiate the two so people don't have to say things like "the smaller one with 2 antennas."

Next, let's talk about the battery and strap. It's so dumb to have a long cable connected to a battery you have to put in your pocket. It's clunky, unrefined and annoying. The first thing I did was cut the wire and solder it back only 5 or 6" long and used a velcro strap to attach the battery to the head strap. It's so much better now and functions as a self contained unit so you can remove the goggles and set them down without worrying about having a battery and long cable getting in the way. It works great, but I'd be interested in a 3rd party upgraded strap that has a battery slot built in. Does anyone know of one being made yet?

Comfort. The Goggles V2 (older, larger one with 4 antennas) are very comfortable. I can wear them for many flights with no issues. The Goggles 2 (newer, smaller one with 2 antennas) hurts my nose and face after just 1 flight. The foam padding is terrible and puts a ton of pressure on my nose. We need some comfort upgrade facial interfaces asap. Anyone know of solutions for this? I'm sure some products will be coming out at some point and it can't happen soon enough.

The screens do look great and having the ability to adjust them for your eyes is pretty cool, but for me, I cannot get a clear image across the entire screen no matter how I adjust them. The OSD bits get blurred out if the main image is in focus. It's rather annoying to have to reach up and move the goggles to see how much battery you have left. It would be cool if they let us adjust the entire image size so we could make it smaller and have everything fit into a focus area like you could with older goggles. That could be added with firmware I would think so maybe one day we'll get that. What has your experience been?

So for me, I'll be keeping them in hopes of upgrades that will make the experience better. If you don't absolutely need the smaller size or head tracking with the motion controller, then you might be better off spending less money and getting the Goggles V2 (older, larger one with 4 antennas) for now."
