Setup suggestions

Hello all,

I'm looking at getting my first FPV, I have numerous other Rc things, mainly fast electric boats, everything from 3s mini's doing 60mph+ to a 14s twin cat doing close to 120mph so have plenty experience in relation to lipos / brushless etc.

I also have a Mavic 2 pro but would like to start doing some more cinematic FPV filming of my other toys / mountain biking, have a hero 9 I normally use for Mtb / filming the boats. the 2 pro has been great for photography - I work on a cruise ship so plenty of opportunity but looking for something more exciting for video.

Anyway - this is the setup I was thinking to get me started, I will spend plenty of time practicing in liftoff before taking flight.

iFlight Nazgul5 V2 6s.
Radiomaster TX16S with crossfire
FatShark Scout
Tattu R line 3.0 1050mah 120c.

Chargers I have a few graupner Polaron's I can use, and will also next time I place a order for boat Lipo's start using the SLS NoC 110c packs for the drone.

Can anyone chime in if this is a good start, what am I missing? I've watched a good few hours of YouTube videos and had a good read to get to this point.

I will download reelsteady closer to the time I start flying and already have Final Cut Pro for video editing.

Thanks, Liam.

Hey Liam, first off - welcome to the forum!  :welcome:

I'd have said that beginning FPV at 6s might be a bit of a challemge, but if you're hoofing 120mph boats about then you'll be fine!
Good call getting some time in on the SIMS, it's going to save you a lot of grief, not to mention walking to find bits of smashed quads in the early days.

lookign forward to seeing what you come up with!

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the welcome, I debated getting a 4s rig, I just thought with previous rc experience I should be okay, im pretty competent at flying my Mavic in sports mode in different conditions so hopefully will be a step in the right direction

although I can always strap a 4s pack onto my 6s drone  for some practice with lower rpm's.

The only things ive purchased so far are the goggles and 2 6s packs, everything else is out of stock so please feel free to chime in if there is better options available. I do really like the look of the Nazgul, I was recommended the Diatone Roma as a good alternative to the Nazgul but for now I think I'll stick with Nazgul...

- As for smashed bits, I've fried a fair few boat bits in my time. luckily a Nazgul equates to about

1/36 the cost of my 1.85m boat so ill feel less terrible every time something goes wrong with it. hopefully I can film the boats a little with the FPV but I don't really trust anybody to pilot my bigger boats, not like I can just throw someone the remote on a FPV.

also this is the type of thing I'd like to film (filmed on a Mavic 2 pro) but would like more action orientated close up shots - I have since mastered the tracking feature on the 2pro since filming these videos just the top speed of the 2pro is a limiting factor.

Is the gear im proposing to buy a good setup for what I want to achieve? (after lots of flight time?)

Kind regards Liam

Not looking too promising getting a Nazgul in the UK was told 2 weeks now 6 weeks, can anyone recommend me a suitable alternative that is 6s, max price say £250. (could stretch it if needs be)

I dare say people could recommend you some components to build a quad out of if the BMF one you want is out fo stock everywhere - it sounds like a little light soldering wouldn't be any problem for you.

I would say that, as much fun as FPV quad'ing is, it's maybe not the greatest filming platform because of the fixed angle of the camera.

I could probably solder one up, but for my first foray into the hobby I'd prefer to just go ARTR

I'm also wondering about filming aspect, thinking to order a quark stabiliser 2, only thing a hero 9 is pretty heavy to begin with (not sure how you balance a drone, guess it's same as with boats just shifting the batteries for COG - we normally run 28-32% from the stern...)

If I got a GoPro session, even with the quark stabiliser the gimbal + session is still about 100 grams less than the hero 9... Hero 9's are right porkers.

It's also another £300 invested before I've even taken off.. time is tight for me, will probably be back in the uk less than a month and off on a ship again with no post for months so might just bite the bullet.

Re:(not sure how you balance a drone)

Generally its nothing like as critical as other models as the FC electronics compensates, to the point its often forgotten about, but you do ideally need to limit off-balance without being anal over it.   :D

With a multi motor set up, note the motor shaft positions, then imagine a diagonal across front to rear opposite. Where the lines cross is the balance point.  Obviously if you are balancing a heavy weight on the nose, it helps to mount other hardware further back, but then when the load is not ON, it is off the other way. Sometimes the battery can be the counterbalance, but not always.

A very out of balance quad will be working motors harder to stay level, which might reduce flight time, though in most cases the motors working harder will be largely offset by the ones doing less work (if the motors are capable and in their normal current range!)

Many quad only flyers would say CG, what's that!!  :whistling:

Good to know, from a boating background CG is about the most critical adjustment you can make for good ride attitude, with strut depth / angle (if you can adjust) you guys have it easy...

I think I will get the gimball, just need to find a nice session 5 on eBay now.
