Stuck in the 70s.....

I've broken something, I think....

Firefly q6, N3 osd, eachine  (boscam?) Vtx.

It was all connected and working fine but I had a cheap Vtx that was getting so hot that the frequency drifted, after reading someone else's review where they had the same problem I bought the replacement.

Then proceeded to connect the power the wrong way round, just not paying attention, which melted the ground wire to the N3 and (having fixed the melted wire) gave me black and white images on the screen 😕 I refitted the original Vtx but still b&w so I've replaced the N3 but, sadly, still b&w. The camera records in colour so hopefully it's not that - which just leaves the little board on the av out cable (already ordered a replacement), or have I just missed something in the settings etc somewhere?

You are learning fast. Always double check wiring as getting it wrong destroys things. Also it's not just enough to check by colour of he wires as some far east manufacturers have been known to mix things up!!!!
Anyway back to b/w. In fault finding I usually start at one end, in this case the camera. As once you know it's outputting colour you know the issue is towards the vtx.
So I would get power to the camera and then connect the video out to a tv via composite (yellow phono) or Scart (with adapter) or if you have a fpv screen with video in use that. If you get a colour image then the camera should be OK. One thing to remember is the TV format, NTSC (US) and PAL(UK). Some things need to be set to the same tv format as the camera for them to work in colour!!!!!!
So if you have a working colour camera, connect it directly to the vtx and see if that is where the issue is. Check that what ever you are watching the image on is correct TV format, maybe flick between formats to check if you can.

If that's only in b/w maybe its somehow (although doubtful) the vtx. If it's colour then it looks like it's the OSD.

OSD normally neets to be same TV format as camera, is there any way to set this up?

So to sum up, check colour out from camera and check everything is set to same tv system as camera is outputting.

Hope that gives you a clue. Have to pop out now, I will check back later.
I try :-)

You're always straight in there talking sense Ched, thankyou  ~~ it works well for me, apart from the expense (learning from my mistakes). It should have been a nice simple red to red and black to black (a plug I fitted myself) but I was busy trying to explain that very fact (and the fact that it didn't have a ridge and could be inserted incorrectly, so I had to watch what I was doing) to someone when I should have been watching what I was doing  :banghead:

I'm a little tangled up in it all so this'll hopefully help me as much as anything else;

Camera connected directly to (new)vtx = B&W
Camera connected directly to (old) vtx = B&W
Camera connected to (new) vtx via a replacement osd = B&W
Camera connected to (old) vtx via a replacement osd = B&W
Camera records to card in colour
Camera connected to tv via hdmi lead = colour in realtime

So, the new av out lead's on its way somewhere and hopefully that'll sort it. If it doesn't, I either blew something in the camera or I'm stumped

OOps.

OK what camera is it?
When checking the camera you ideally need to use the connection that you are using to the vtx or at least the same output.
The problem with hdmi out is that as it's a digital signal, I don't think, that tv format is used. I have a feeling that tv format is only analogue output but I could be wrong there.

Just have a quick check that you can't change the tv out format of the camera to PAL. Well actually change it to an alternative then test again. It could be as simple as a camera setting.
I try :-)

Ah, sorry, missed that - the usual av out is a mini usb but connecting that to the telly will show it's either the wire or the camera; I already know that much. As far as I can see, I'll have to wait for the new av wire to arrive - if still no colour it more or less proves it's the camera but I'm quite hopeful it'll be the wire  :crossfingers:.

It's a hawkeye firefly q6, I couldn't find the exact same wire but I did find someone on a different forum saying the one for the 6s will work fine. Strangely enough, everything I've plugged it into so far seems ok with both pal and ntsc. Sadly both end up black and white so that doesn't seem to be the problem  :(

The new AV wire didn't solve anything so I've ordered a firefly s6 instead, hopefully the quality will equal the q6 as I was very impressed for what it cost (not that I've got much to compare it to) I'll be majorly confused if I still can't get colour images, I don't think there's anything left to change  :huh
