Considering another build

Hello All. As some of you may remember I got a bit fed up a couple of months ago and decided to give up crashing copters. The problem is they keep calling to me "come build me come fly me" I have tried to ignore this constant crying but to no avail. So may be it is time to build again. But first I think I should see if I can throw any light on why my previous copters fell from the sky. I built both quad and hex using an Apm 2.6 ebay bought fc. I found that flying either of them manually in stabilise mode would be fine and I even managed to get through the auto tune thingy on the quad. I was just starting to learn my way around the flight planner and auto pilot when I noticed that it would suddenly drop into land mode and wander off down wind. One time it did this it crashed rather hard and broke an motor mount. I search this forum and elsewhere on the net and found reference to the compass giving an error. the fix was to turn of this particular part of the system. I now built the hex only to find it was even worse again it would fly reasonably well under manual control but as soon as I tried to use any of the auto modes other than stabilise or alt hold it would wander off infact wander is the wrong word it roared  off at a rather high angle.
I have given this a lot of thought and come to two possible conclusions.
1 the board was a cheap knock off and not worth while flying again.
2 as I powered the board from the ESC';s and had some extra stuff plugged into the board (telemetry ext) Did I brown out the board once it was working hard to fly the copter.
So now I am left with enough bits to build a copter But am nervous I really don';t want to have the same problems again perhaps there is a better board I can use. I don';t need a board that does brilliant aerobatics or racing. I just want a stable platform and flight  plan capability for photography and video.
Thank you to all the wonderful people who have read this huge post

Build strong mate ....that';s what matters

OK so not cheap but you could get the good old tried and tested DJI Naza-M Lite for about £62 new on ebay?
You can ';update'; the FW to get better position hold.
I have one with ';updated FW'; and find it great on my F450. I seem to remember the Naza not liking certain esc but I am sure if you have a search here you will find out if your esc will be OK.
I don';t think the naza will do way points but it does hold in gps mode quite well. Well stable enough for me to take hands off and adjust gimbal controls. It does have settings for max altitude, ring fence, and Return to Home.

Welcome back anyway.
I try :-)

I think it was the Emax with Simon-k  esc';s that had the problem.

Thanks for your replies. If I decide to get my self a naza how do I know which ones are good. I really dont want to end up with a copy . I would rather spend a bit more and get a genuine one. Muppet

Oh interesting. I didn';t know there are copies of Naza. I assumed as they have to connect to Naza Assistant to be able to be configured they were sort of impossible to copy. That said the FW can be ';updated'; to the better version.
Hopefully someone will come back with an proper answer.
I try :-)

How close to the Power lines/board is your compass/GPS
Have you run compassmot?

I don';t know if there are copies of the boards. So I guess that';s part of my question How do I know there are no copies.  I did the compass tune thing on the apm it said no interference. I still suspect  the power supply. I didnt realise there was any need to run a bec to feed the apm I took the power from the esc';s thinking this would be good enough. Perhaps I am wrong. I am happy to be wrong if I learn from it.Muppet

Sorry no idea if there are copies.
As for APM again no idea. I assume when you say power from esc you mean esc with built in bec giving 5v out? If not then you might be feeding it with battery voltage?
I believe the APM is more capable than the naza in that APM can do waypoint I think. The Naza is fairly simple to setup and has limited options you can configure, like it has gains not PID settings. I tend to think of DJI stuff like Apple products in that if you want to do what DJI allow then great, they are easy and reliable. If you want to do something weird then the Naza wont let you  ::) ::) ::) ::)

I took power from the servo plugs on on all 6  esc';s . Plugged this into the fc then the receiver into the fc also with servo leads.
I also had a telemetry tx plugged into the fc. Led lights direct to the battery. and lipo checker plugged into balance leads.  No gimble or camera drawing any current as the camera was fixed and had it own battery . I think that covers it. Muppet

It';s probably not relevant but I know there was a time where using bec from more than 1 esc wasn';t best practice. Can';t remember if the issue was related to specific type of esc bec or not. Is it easy to disconnect power wire from 5 esc at the servo plug and tape up bare connector to be safe?

Ah ha I didn';t know that. I have just ordered a bec for the apm I already have. I think I will give it one more try. I will fit it with out the gps maybe build a simple quad to start with . Then add gps extra after successful flights.  It could very like be me and my lack of skill or experience. I am sure it';snot my flying . I have flown fixed wing for many years and have a syma here which I have flown loads of times. I Just can';t seem to get auto pilot functions working right.
