NAZA DROPS OUT OF THE SKY

Hi guys,

Well, I decided to try my Naza';s failsafe with return to home. I changed the settings in the assistant software and saved to naza. Took her out for a spin and turned my transmitter off when she was about 20 meters away at 2 meters height. To my surprise, she dropped dead to the floor as if the power was just cut. All motors stopped and down she went into a pile of reeds! lol.

Any ideas what would have caused this? I was expecting a graceful return to home and not a walk in the bog! lol

Did u set failsafe with 50% throttle ?

Also most failsafes take a sec or two to cut in.. there is a delay normally

Stef, something';s definitely wrong there. You shouldn';t need to set the throttle to 50% with the Naza as it just takes over control of the throttle once it drops into failsafe mode. The only stipulation according to DJI is that it shouldn';t be below 10%.

The Naza needs that 10% above the end point to make sure the motors don';t just shut off and dis-arm - that';s the only throttle requirement for Failsafe. Obviously, if the motors have dis-armed, the Naza can';t then operate the quad.

There is short delay though as Jumpy07 said so if you were descending I suppose its possible that it could continue to drop before the failsafe kicked in but I';ve never experienced this problem with the Naza.

Did you try switching off the transmitter when it was still connected to the Assistant? and if so, did the correct Failsafe segment get highlighted? Did you assign the Failsafe to a switch on your Tx (always a good idea - and best to test it with this first rather than switching of your Tx). The failsafe setting can be quite critical and you need to make sure its bang in the centre and not just on the edge of being highlighted.

Here';s DJI';s advice: http://wiki.dji-innovations.com/en/index.php/Naza-M_Control_Mode_Switch

Give me a call on Friday if you don';t get to the bottom of the problem and I';ll see if I can help

I don';t know what Tx you are using but this thread will give you some pointers anyway as to how to set RTH up in Naza assistant:-

Hi guys,

Thanks for all your useful comments and thanks for your concern regarding the TBS (what about me, no one asked if I was okay! I don';t know... men!) lol. I';m glad to say that the TBS landed nicely in a lovely patch of reeds without a hair out of place!

I forgot to say, I did have the throttle binded to 0%. I re-binded this to 50% last night, but want to make sure I have most things sorted before I try it again above another patch of reeds! lol

Okay, so I have a JR DSX 9 transmitter. http://www.macgregor.co.uk/jrpropo/DSX9.htm

I am using it with a Spektrum AR7000.

I dont think my TX supports the failsafe receiver output! I';m not sure!

I have programmed one of the three position switches to Man-Atti-GPS, but I don';t know how to program another switch for RTH/RTL.

I was also thinking, do I really need Man? I could just set that to FAILSAFE-Atti-GPS, then just flick the switch up for POS HOLD and down for RTH and middle for LEVEL.

What do you guys think?

you could go without man mode but you do need man mode to calibrate the compus. And did you remove the bind plug before binding ?
If you find yourself in danger of being taken seriously, then try to do something which undermines or sabotages that perception in some way.

I would go with out manual mode.

Your TX and RX will need to support failsafe lost of power to TX for this to work correctly.  However setting one of your 3 pos switch wont need to as its just a setting.

My guess is that you didn';t bind your throttle at 10% above the end point which DJI say you MUST do - this is to stop the motors dis-arming which appears to be what happened. Any setting above 10% makes no difference so setting at 50% is not necessary just as long as its above 10%. Obviously, if your receiver doesn';t support failsafe then its not going to work if you switch off! - I don';t think the AR7000 does but someone will correct me if I';m wrong.

Its also not clear from what you';ve said whether you have in fact correctly programmed the failsafe function. You MUST program a switch to failsafe first in order to set the RX ';off'; stick positions otherwise the Rx has no indication of which settings it defaults to.

The other suggestion you have is NOT a good idea as you need to be able to switch between flight modes to come out of RTH/failsafe mode

Make sure you have two switches set up – a 3-position switch for GPS/Atti/Man and another single position switch for RTH (the Gear switch is good for this).

As I said before, you need to be able to rapidly switch between the flight modes to cancel RTH that's why you definitely need this function.

Once you've set these switches – make sure you're in GPS mode, set the RTH switch to ON and set the throttle to 10% above end point – and then bind this as your Rx default failsafe position – and you're done!

homersainty

a quick reread and i got your problem you need failsafe setup on a switch as when you bind the TX needs to be in failsafe so you can set man gps and failsafe on your mode switch rebind (with bind plug removed and mode switch set to failsafe) then you can reset your mode switch back to man atti gps hope this makes sense as  I';m shattered

You defo need an RX that has a fail-safe setting. I had to put FrSky module into my Turnigy 9X (an interesting wee mod as it adds a flashy LED!!)

I love the feeling of a working fail-safe, just switch the TX off, sit down, relax and wait...

I realize as I am writing this that everyone else has probably already told you this. They are right!

That';s why I got a futaba T9C transmitter.  So I could fit a FrSky module 2.4GHz  and use a FrSky receiver with full failsafe setting on all channels and telemetry.  It beeps if you start to get out of range.  Does the job and didn';t break the bank for a failsafe solution.

Balders

AR7000 def supports failsafe, it';s what I use on mine :)

Did you switch off the Tx whilst plugged into your PC in naza assistant to check it flicks to failsafe?  Sounds like a "didn';t get bound with switch in failsafe position" to me ;)

Another thing, on some Tx';s you can have real problems with the Tx not allowing you to switch on (even with bind held down) if certain switches are out of position.  What I had to do was assign a different switch to the one I wanted to use, perform the bind with that switch and later on post-binding re-assign the switch on the Tx. Worked like a charm.

Let us know if there';s anything else we can do to help.

im also using ar7000 on mine works a treat..
dx7 set up in single servo heli mode, 3 pos flight switch for man/atti/gps..
throttle hold activates failsafe mode..

Hi again,

Well! I';m not getting anywhere with this!

I';ve now fitted two extra cables to the x1 and x2 connectors so that I don';t have to take the top plate off again. Ok, my transmitter is a JR DSX9 http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__9895__JR_DSX9_MK2_2_4G_DSM2_Transmitter_w_RD921_Receiver_Mode_2_.html. My receiver is a Spektrum AR7000. The JR TX supports two different types of failsafe (what they are I dont know) and the Spectrum RX also supports fail safe. I use fail safes with this TX/RX combo on my planes and it works fine, but it works differently!

I understand that I have to have one 3 position switch for changing between Man-Att-GPS. This same switch is used to calibrate the compass and also regain control during a RTL if you need to!

I also understand that the throttle setting on the TX during bind is at 10% + which I';ve now done.

I';ve used the sub trims and travel adjust on the TX to get the arrows on the Assistant into the middle and the 3 position switch works beautifully with Man-Att-GPS arrows all in the middle.

When I turn the transmitter off whilst connected to the Assistant, there is no indication that it goes into failsafe mode. I also don';t know how to setup the gear 2 position switch to work for the RTL function. Do I have to use mixing or something clever this blonde doesn';t understand?

Thanks for all your help,

Stef (gimme my MultiWii, at least then I can look in the code! lol. just kidding you naza fanz) xx

move endpoints on gear ch till failsafe is highlighted in software when switch is flicked for failsafe..

If its working, it will change to RTH on the assist when you turn the radio off. That i do know.

About setting up the radio i don';t know with that one, i have it all done on my DX8

Whippeee! At long last after many searches on Google I';ve managed to sort it out! Blooming eck, it wasn';t easy and involved some mixing as well as changing three switch assignments and binding using a technique which i haven';t used before which is to remove the bind cable from the Spektrum AR7000 before turning the transmitter on in bind mode. I normally leave the bind cable in until the binding process is finished, but with Spektrum SmartSafe AR7000 and alike it doesn';t store all switch assignments until after you bind this way! Useful note! So, I will create a new post for this just in case others in Google search for a solution, then they can come to our forum for lots of help!  ::) ::)
