SPR F3, Cleanflight, Taranis HELP!

Mudders

Please could somebody help me, I';m struggling big time here to get my TX, RX and SPRF3 to talk nicely.

I have bound a new D4r-ii with my Taranis X9D (flashed with EU firmware), I have confirmed the bind with a servo which works fine.
I have the jumper pin on pins 3 and 4 on the D4r
I have SPF3 IO2 pins 1,2 and 3 connected to port 1 on the D4r
I have UART pin 4 (green wire) connected to the telemetry port on the side of the D4r.

ISSUE:

As soon as I connect the ccpm cable to the RX the green light goes out on the RX and the tx and rx stop speaking. telemetry is lost too.

If I connect all up and hook it to cleanflight the connection is there (green light on rx).

No matter what I do, I cannot get the stick inputs to show in CFlight.

Cleanflight configuration has RX Serial and Sbus selected

Ports has UART1 MSP and  UART 2 serial tx selected

Receiver had AETR1234 selected

But it';s dead.

What am I missing please (forgive me I';m a spekky guy in a whole new world lol)

Muds

PS happy xmas :-)

Festive greetings.

The D4R-II is not a serial receiver.  Connect it to IO1, disable serial RX in the ports tab, and enable RX_PPM in the config tab.

I would like to associate myself with the remarks of the previous speaker :)

you have the receiver settings for a Frsky X4Rsb, not a D4R,

Dear Quadfather,

I think I love you  :beer2: :beer2: :beer2:

Many thanks for replying, onwards :-)

Mudders

Next step, and I';m stumped already  :cry :cry

I now have the main 4 channels working as they should in CF, but I cannot get Aux 1 to work for flight modes, any ideas?

Also, with the FC unplugged and just powered up it';s fine, but as soon as the FC is connected and it';s initiated the green light on the RX goes out and telemetry is lost! When plugged into CF and lipo connected it all seems to be fine (apart from the above).

Openpilot and CC3d was soo much easier!

I';d love to have this flying for new years eve  :waiting: :waiting:

Mudders

SUMD chosen has the switches working on the taranis now

Struggling with switch SA as a 3 pos switch for flight modes. Only getting 2 positions so far

Still no permanent connection between radio and rx when plugged into the FC.

what AUX channel are you putting SA down?
what happens on the reciever tab aux channel in cleanflight when you move it?

As you';re not using RX_SERIAL on the D4R-ii, choosing SUMD shouldn';t make a difference as far as I';m aware.

How are you powering your receiver? My builds almost always power the receiver from the flight controller. The SPRF3 doesn';t power the receiver when it';s plugged in via USB only, it needs 5V on the servo rail to do this (i.e. only when the lipo is connected and powering the separate 5V reg). If you';re powering your Rx from a lipo and SPRF3 from USB when testing this might cause issues as they may not be sharing a common ground, perhaps causing your Rx to brown out and lose connection? Not tried that myself so just guessing.

Just to check you';ve got your switch config right - On the Taranis you can map SA to input 5 and remember to add it to the mixer page as well. Don';t add any weighting or offest to it and check that the Taranis shows you the output moving from -100 to 0 to +100 in the 3 positions. Back in Cleanflight, add ranges on AUX1 for your flight modes that correspond to each switch position. This is easiest to check with everything powered up so you can see the position change in Cleanflight when you move the switch.

If you want to use all 8 channels on the D4R-ii you';ll probably need to flash the 27ms firmware, there';s an FrSky dongle for that but you can also do it with an FTDI as someone on the forum has kindly demonstrated: http://www.multi-rotor.co.uk/index.php?topic=16417.msg147752#msg147752

HTH

Mudders

Many thanks for your replies. I seem to have it all figured out now,  after a lot of reading,  trial and error. I messed up on the taranis mix ptogramming, led astray by following a youtube vid which was not exactly what I was looking for.
Everything is working ace with the exception of the rgb leds. I am using io1 wire 7 for data to the led strip and pos negative from servo out no 5. All I get is red. I have programmed it in clean flight. Have I got the correct wiring?

Mudders

To elaborate on the above,

I have tried running the LEDS + and - from:

Servo Header pins, all spare channels.
Buzzer pins
UART 1 and 2 + and - pins
+ and - on spare RX channel.
IO1 + and -

While the LEDS seem to respond ok when hooked up to Lipo AND USB in cleanflight, as soon and it';s booted up from the LiPo only, the RX light goes out and all LED';s turn white. There';s a problem somewhere but I';m stuck for options. I cant try running them from IO2 because my RX is connected to those pins.

Where am I going wrong?

Cheredanine

you may not be going wrong, any +5 and ground should power the LEDs, signal wire is IO1 pin 7
However a lot of people have had problems with programable LEDs, the voltage tollerance on some is very specific compared to the 5V rail on FCs (not just SP3)
It seems particularly accute on the bendy WS2812s, seem quit a few complaints, I had some that completely missbehaved, replaced with a matek combined LED and buzzer board and those ones worked no problem
seem specifc on which brand you have

Mudders

Thanks, I thought I was going mad. I am using a matek with buzzer on the front, a matek on the rear center and a different brand rear left and right. I';ll desolder them and add them one at a time to try and weed out the problem.

Mudders

Leds sorted. I gave them their own power supply, all working nice now. I had a test hover and all good. I would like to set a low battery warning on my taranis so that';s the next project. I don';t know if it';s possible with the d4r-ii.

Yellow

I had the same with my rgb strip and sprf3 when powering from servo rail. Gave them their own power and all was well - strange

Mudders

All sorted! Just the green telemetry wire to connect and choose FRSky in cleanflight.

YAY now all ready to fly and tune. Even managed to update my Taranis with a new splash screen and sounds.

Looking forward to some 4s fun :-)

Thanks all,

Muds

quadfather

Glad you got it sorted.  Apologies for going quiet, been abroad visiting family and haven';t been on much.

Enjoy your quad. ~~

Good morning all

Sorry to revive this thread, but I am having a similar conundrum.

I note the solutions appears to be connect the D4R-ii analogue port to IO1, which also takes the CPPM signal.  I have already taken the 5 redundant wires out of the plug for the FC IO port, leaving +- and S.  Consequently, I dont know which is the green pin wire!  :sweating:

Can someone please confirm which pin on IO1 the D4R-ii RX pin should be connected to?  Is it 4, 5 or 6?

thanks in advance.

EDIT:  do I need to run a ground from the D4R-ii telemetry port to somewhere too?

Mudders

Hi all,

After a lay off I';ve decided being a sucker for punishment I';d dust her off and have an update.

I loaded cleanflight 1.2.3
I flashed V1.13.0 to the board, all seemed well, but now I get incorrect cell voltage on the taranis It reads 0v.. I get rssi ok, and voltages for A1 4.9v and A2 5.8v (whatever they are).

While I was in the mood for messing I also added a minum micro osd.

This seems to be working ok but I also get 0v, although the Mah is counting up and rssi is showing.

The voltage is showing correctly in cleanflight (15.4v)

Taranis will not ';discover'; cels when searching, but it did before.

I';m not sure if its a cleanflight thing or a taranis thing, all I know is it was working before, and not now!

Any ideas folks? I bought the osd so I could see the volts, and I cant!

Thanks
Mat

Cheredanine

Sounds like the flight controller is not reading the voltage.
Is the "use FC voltage" set in mwosd? If it is and anything else is coming through then it should show voltage.

Check in configurator that you have voltage sensor enabled on the config page and check it shows the voltage in configurator

Mudders

Thanks for your reply, I';ll check the mwosd tonight.
In cleanflight I have telemetry checked.

Mudders

Osd working great now thanks.

Cleanflight has vbat checked on and is showing voltage (15.7), also showing in the setup page.

What else is there to check?

Cheredanine

You are talking about telemetry through the d4rii to the taranis right?
Assuming I am reading correctly you had it working with an old version of cf and all you have done is flashed a later version (not changed any wiring between the d4r and the FC and the d4r is still bound to the taranis

Then in cf :
Enable telemetry on the config page of configurator
On the ports page for the uart you have the s-port cable connected to, set it to telemetry: frsky

You may need to set telemetry inversion on the cli (check the cf wiki for the command, don';t recall

Mudders

Yep your correct, I';ve got the single green wire from the side of the rx to uart 1 as before. Frsky telemetry  in cleanflight as before. The taranis is not finding cels hence the 0v reading. I';ve tried the cli command with no change.
