Less is more I find. Ok you may get 50% more flight time, but you';re increasing the load on your hardware a fair bit and it';ll be slugish.

What motor/prop are you running?

PropsToYou

As it';s only for aerial video it doesn';t need to be a rocket, but agreed, it';ll need to be able to keep out of trouble, and keep up with targets.

Two of these wired in parallel would be 150g lighter.. http://www.hobbyking.co.uk/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=65274

Won';t the E310 setup take 4s?

PropsToYou

Ah nice shout with those batteries!!
Yes technically they can but I';ve invested so much in 3S';s and with no way of changing the setting in the field I';m kind of stuck with them for now :/

The recommended takeoff weight for the E310 setup on 3s is 1400g. What is it now with your 4400?

PropsToYou

I';m running a hex so it';s a recommended takeoff weight of 2100g.
With my 4400 it';s 2200 so to be fair, I';m already at limit :/

Wow great shout with that battery! I';m guessing as it';s just for aerial video, the 10-20C is ok?

Have you done any current draw testing? Any idea what it draws in a hover and at full throttle?

Edit: What is the max dia you can get on there?

It';s my bed time. Catch up in the morning ;)

PropsToYou

Unfortunately not, how would I go about doing this?
Would I take a reading, hover for X amount of minutes then take a reading, then with a fresh battery keep it moving at high power for x amount of minutes and take a reading, then work out the rate of power draw?

You';ll need a watt-meter... http://www.hobbyking.co.uk/hobbyking/store/__471__157__Tools-Watt_Meter.html

Most of them show the min volts, max watts and max amps measured. Just connect the meter between the battery and power connector on your hex. Launch, hover for a few seconds and land and see what it says. For full throttle, do the same but give it full throttle for a few seconds instead of hovering, land and see what it says.

IMO they';re one of the most important tools to have. Great for testing the load on your ESCs and motors, but really useful to see what effect different props have. For this it';s invaluable. You can';t get the most out of your motors with prop choice without knowing what effect the props have on load.

Regarding the MultiStar batteries, I';ve found that they don';t really like much more than a 5c constant draw as they get bad voltage droop. This is why they';re great for gimbal ships, which are just hovering most of the time.

PropsToYou

Ah cool, cheaper than I was expecting.
Do you think this one would be sufficient? My ESC';s are rated to a maximum of 30A so I';m guessing so: http://linkowl.net/483a

My main concern would be the weight.  Check what your hover throttle is with your current set up.  If over 50% don';t go adding more weight.   I think your flying this with a naza so the only way to check is to fly it in manual mode.  Attitude and GPS give a spoofed throttle reading

Hmm ok I';ll check this. Is 50% is when the throttle stick is 50% of the way between centred and full top or is it when it';s centred?

Oh ok, not that one then. Basically you want a 100A one. I got mine from my local shop. It wasn';t cheap at £25 but I like to support local business within reason.

Soler

This battery is 8400mah at 40c therefore it will deliver 252amp constant current which is well over what you will need.   I suspect you will be at around 18 Amps at hover.  At peak you probably 35.   Generally speaking for AP work 20c is all you need and a 20C is lighter than a 40c bat.

Hi mate,
What flight times are you getting at the moment?

I';m using a f550 at the moment can';t remember what my AUW is...but I think it';s nearer 3kg with battery etc (using ****** poor kitchen scale so I could be way out)  :D
I';m using a bog standard turnigy 5000mah (30c I think)  and get between 8-10 mins flying time. I';m using 10" props and 935kv multistar motors.

http://www.hobbyking.co.uk/hobbyking/store/__26668__Turnigy_5000mAh_3S_30C_Lipo_Pack_UK_Warehouse_.html

You can start getting things like arm extensions etc but when you start factoring in cost you may as well try and snag a Tarot 680 frame, or even a second hand set up with motors and esc';s?

I don';t even know where I';d start to trim the weight on my Hex! or even if I want to? Though I must admit watching an 8min flight video on youtube seems like an age but when you';re flying it';s over in a blink of an eye :D

I did see that but can';t see it mention anywhere that it records peaks as another one that looks great on HK looks like it should but a comment mentions it doesn';t.

I';m averaging around 7-10 mins flight time on it with a mix of hovering and soft to medium movement. That';s with roughly 2.2kg AUW on a 4500mah 3S (35-70).

Yeah I';ve only just swapped out my arms for the AeroXcraft X50';s which are the same size as the stock ones, just smaller and lighter. I was debating going for the extended arms but they were over twice the price and wasn';t sure quite if it';d be worth it.

Likewise, I very nearly purchased a second hand Tarot setup from Soler on here but alas funds are a little too slim to go buying a whole new rig, even at the steal of the price he was offering it for.

I know what you mean about the flight ending in seconds in the field but lasting a life time on the screen. However, for me, it';s the ability to stay in the air to capture everything I need without the need to RTH, change batteries and head back out again.

The 7 in 1 does record the peaks.  It';s the one I use

Well the only way around it is to buy extensions, go lower kv motors, bigger props...or stand closer to the target :D

Don';t know if 3s is viable for bigger props though? Suppose you';d have to look at thrust/amps used?

I know motor efficiency will make a massive difference on your flight times, it';s just looking at the sums.

You';ll get away with bigger props if you reduce the pitch. The result should be less climb rate but more efficiency in a hover. Plus those CF T-Motor props have a lot less drag than most props, they really are excellent and very efficient.
