Emax Prop Nuts - Keep Spinning off on crash.

Thought I';d post a fresh as I';m spending more time looking for the prop nuts when crashing rather than flying.

So I have EMAX MT2204 2300kv motors. These are the directional ones.
The prop nut tightens up as you would expect and tighten the same way as they spin to prevent them coming undone when flying.

Although when I crash the bolt seems to spin off.
I';m guessing the motor is still spinning whilst the prop is stationary causing it to unwind then nut when it hits the floor.

Any tips?

ChavasRegal

If you have directional motors / nuts the nut should tighten when you spin the prop in the rights direction. Unless all your motors are the same thread.

Revs

Sounds like you';ve got it the wrong way round bud. The nuts should loosen the same way the motor spins. If you hold the nut and spin the motor, the nuts should tighten.

I';m not sure. Can anyone confirm.

Looking down from the top with the front away from me.

Bottom right :- CW Motor Thread (silver nut).
Bottom left :- CCW Motor Thread (black nut).
Front right :- CCW Motor Thread (black nut).
Front left :- CW Motor Thread (silver nut).

edit:- seems the rotation appears to refer to the direction the nut turns when tightening, not motor rotation...never noticed that. Gutted.

I was going to say use lock nuts on the cw motors and some left hand thread nuts with blue loc tite on the ccw motors but then noticed your edit, you';ll need to swap the motors around unfortunately. The ';good'; news is that the prop spinners will still undo themselves in a crash where the motor stops suddenly. Motor stops and spinner keeps on spinning. So swap motors and place spinners in the bin and follow above instructions.

Next build go for all cw threaded prop shafts and use lock nuts all round,  no more searching through the grass roots then bud.

it just makes sense

Yeah that one got me the first time  Time to swap the motors around. Bit of a pain in the arse but not the end of the world

tkboyle

Do you think I could get away with undoing the side lock screw and swapping the tops?

Revs

You could do that, or remove the E-clip from the underside and swap the bell and shaft. Either way. Good thinking

How odd!  I have never had an issue with self locking prop nuts, best things since sliced bread AFAIAK, still each to his own I guess.  :-/
Be wary using nuts with threadlock, sometimes it';s extremely difficult to get them off, especially at the field, where all the action happens.

Yep the reason why I went for CW and CCW motor lock nuts... but they only work when installed correctly unlike my dumbass put them on the wrong way round. Misconstruing thread direction for motor direction.

Thats why you haven';t had an issue.

Clockwise propeller rotation = Anti Clockwise nuts (black)

Anti Clockwise propeller rotation = Clockwise nuts (silver)

Both so that if the motors stop spinning the nuts tighten.

unless the spinner decides that it does indeed have its own mass and subsequent momentum and is bound by the same laws of physics as the rest of the motor?

I bought 2 sets of emax 1806 motors from different sources. The first lot the silver domes were for the ccw motors and the second lot the silver domes were for the cw motors.

just thought I should add this as you cant assume colours are one type - you have to go by the way it tightens

what do you guys recommend instead of spinners then? threadlike can be a pain, especially on a small thread and i would imagine left hand thread lock nuts in this size are like hens teeth ?

Dougelove

I had the same problem. Ditch the domes, but some cw nylocs and buy plenty of ccw halfnuts and use two!! Problem solved. Oh and yes ccw nylocs are rarer than lefthanded screwdrivers. I got quoted £75 to manufacture them from ccw 1m bar! I';d say less than 100.... 2 Half nuts all the way.
Everyone has the right to be stupid, some abuse that privilege.

tkboyle

Just thought I';d update this...

Yep problem was incorrectly installing the emax motors according to the box. Mistaking Cw for motor direction.

I';ve had a few mishaps since and props although broken the nut has stayed on the motor.
Thanks for the input.

great idea, whats a half nut ?

excuse my ignorance but this is my first build and i want to make sure everything i need is there when i get home from work in a week or so.
