Another attempt at 5.8ghz antenna

Hi guys,

Just thought I';d share my attempt at a skew planar Ariel, pretty pleased with it as my first attempt and works well round the house. Proper range test to do next.

Thanks, the heatshrink hides the messy soldering and i think i need to create a jig to help speed up making the lobes. Fingers crossed it gives me better range than the stock antennas.

I been meaning to have a go myself. Don';t worry about the soldering, so long as it works, it looks good anyway  ::)

Give it a go, its a little bit fiddly when it comes to the soldering of the lobes, but i';m sure it will get easier the more you make them.

Watched a few videos on it and I know Im definitely going to need a jig before I even contemplate it ::).

nice job i just got my cheapo vernier in the mail yesterday to have a go , the irony is that i also got a pig tail in the mail to stop me braking the ant socket off of the vtx and i had a pal come round and wanted me to show him the 250 and how the fat sharks worked .... well you can guess the rest cant you? lol i flew it in to a wall and broke the sma socket off the board lol damn!

does anyone have a pic of a good jig to make?

cheers , no printer, but it gives me ideas to make sth or get some one to print one for me

as for the vtx im not sure if it can be fixed  but i will have a go at it in the morning and see what happens

Just finished the vtx antenna, defiantly easier second time round.

yes i bet it was,  i was thinking that the jig was for bending them to make a nice curve , i watched a vid on u-tube that a guy did and omg was a mess he made of bending the curve lol  what did you use mig wire or copper ? mig is prob the better of the two and bit more springy i would think now i need to find some one with a mig welder  ive lots of  ring main twin core i should be able to use that

the vtx is another mater its got a daughter board on top so ive got to remove that first to get to the tracks i think , a job for the solder sucker i bought at last ,

how did you get that bend in the coax ? ive been looking fo the stuff that stays bent but im not sure which one it is  ive got rg58 and  the same looking one you used just came today from china

I';m using rg402 coax, it has a solid metal outer sheath so stay where ever you bend it. For the lobes I';m using 0.8mm solid copper wire from some mains wire.

Good look with fixing the vtx, it';s always more rewarding to fix something when it';s a challenge

ah rg402 semi rigid  coax   where did you get yours? i looked on ebay and its quite expensive i bought a coax crimp tool yesterday so im all set to make some
ive found some pig tails in rg402 ill give them a go   

the vtx is a write off im sad to say the track lifted and broke of at a resistor or what ever it is
ive got all supplyies now so ill have a go

cheers  i think you would need a hot air station to repair it the leg on the end of what ever it is (little oblong thing with three legs on each side and one of each end  id be happy to pay to have it repaired as the damn things cost 45 quid i think, fs do offer a 50% on exchange but as they are in the states i doubt its worth it  or even if they do it for the uk

The bit you are pointing to doesn';t look like a capacitor as it looks like there are three solder point going to it, could you get a better pic at all, or even just let me know what written on it.

Which model of VTX is it?

immersion rc  fat shark 250mw  yes it defo not a cap as it has three legs on each of it long sides and one at each end  here a pic with out the magnifier which is much better it turns out my phone cam is not to bad
it the white component to the left of the hold with three legs on show the right hand leg on the end is not on it the component will need replacing

Is the component damaged at all? i had a quick search on google but i can';t find any information on what it actually is. If it';s not damaged I should be able to solder it back on.

That';s a bandpass filter.  There are a few manufacturers, e.g. Murata or TDK.  This one may work.

The problem is to find a matching filter as it will be specific to the transmitter.  I reckon any of them that work in the upper 5GHz range would do, the question is how much the signal quality is reduced if you can';t find the exact replacement.

yes its damaged, a leg from the end is gone  if you want a go at it paul ill send it to you if you want and it you cant fix it keep it for parts if it any good  if i get time today ill email fs perhaps they might tell us the value of it

Tested the antennas to 500 feet and the video was solid  next job it to fit FPV gear to my quad and do an air born test.

Got the right-angled RF-SMA connectors  today, just waiting for the RG316 cable to arrive tomorrow.  ::)

Hey where did you find a calc for the skew planes all I can find is clover leaf ones .
I';ve just fin my pro250 fpv cam and fitted a am amoway 200mw vox they are so small I was shocked a great little vtx
I';m  on a boat fishing in the solent right now so I won';t write any more it';s to choppy lol
