I';d suggest make the arms foldable, like the MHQ, that';ll help absorb impact on unscheduled landings ;)

What happened then, tups?  The obvious PIDs aside, why did it crash?  Did the vibrations rip it apart or was that all on landing?

I dropped it as it was heading towards me and I';m not the most confident of LOS flyers. If that was a Hubsan I would have ducked but I panicked instead and dropped the power.  :embarrassed

Well, the RCD1 v0.7 prototype has had it';s maiden. It lasted less than 2 minutes before I had to call in the crash investigators.

What happened.
http://youtu.be/hJ_1gIuLGwI

What was left
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFQ49KCYKcw#ws

Things to note:

Obviously, the PID';s were well out.
Interesting blip (power?) at about 0:46 on the first vid.
Top plate snapped from being too brittle.
Arm mounting hole half ripped out on impact.
First official crash test complete. NCAP rating: Poor

What next?
Reprint and rebuild. This time with ABS and using metal screws for frame mounting.

I';m still wobbling... I would have dropped throttle too. that things got too much power and needs a serious bit of taming.

tupoar

Update:

After talking to a lot of people about different aspects of the initial crash test, I decided to modify the middle plate to include bobbin holes for a custom fc plate. The idea being to reduce as much vibration as possible to the fc. Of course, using this mount would be optional.

Although not tested yet, I believe using 2 of the plates could be used on on any frame that has holes for a 36x36 fc.

A new quad is being printed as you read. Files will be released once all is good.

That sounds like a good idea.  I have one reservation though, and this is entirely based on gut instinct.  In order for vibration damping to work you need to have a certain mass on the suspended platform. Otherwise the vibrations may actually be amplified.  I';d be concerned that slapping the Naze, which weighs about 7 grams, onto that plate will make things worse.  Just putting it out there.

Look forward to your test results, and hopefully my gut is wrong.

My thinking is that some is better than none. I can but give it a try, if not revert back to the old plate. I hope you';re wrong though and by some miracle, I';ve managed to bend the laws of science.

Personally, I think you should  make the plates thicker, a couple of mill at least (like I suggested the other day I was over at yours). Might also help when you put it back together to somehow tether it down and slowly throttle up, watching and listening closely if the plates are resonating as you throttle up, might need some damping. Just a thought. Anyone with more technical skills in the art of resonant frequencies to verify if I';m anywhere near or completely of the mark? ::)

Update:

Despite not having a chance to tune her, I ran 2 3s batts through the Rock Lobster earlier in a large open field. Apart from being very unsteady in a hover and randomly yawing to the left, once you put the power down, she flew very sweet, very easy to control and shifted like a scalded cat!

This week, I';ll get her tuned and some flight video.

For the first time in my life, I did a bit of PID tuning and the quad seemed smooth enough to take out for a spin. So, here it is...

 It done gone worked!!!!!

Looks better without the shakes of the previous test   Looks like you need to make a tilted mobius mount as you';re not going very fast and I';m seeing lots of floor. Good stuff mate, keep up with the tuning!

Said this on the phone to Tup last night after watching the video. Much better performance than the previous bone shaker. Getting there bro well done  ~~

That is looking rather good - felt very stable and planted.  Survived clipping the tree and the unplanned landing by the look of things ~~

Yea, tilted mount and board cam mount and next on the list of things to add. It';s very happy flying nose down, which doesn';t help.

It took a few tumbles yesterday of which the worst was on the video. The only breakages being 3 props.

The flight mode ';Horizon'; wasn';t quite playing ball so i was in a kinda hybrid acro mode, other than that, it';s very locked in and likes being thrown about!

and yes, I am sporting a rather chuffed face today ::)

Just a quick update and question.

Update:
Now that my printer is back in action, I';m working away on a tilted cam mount and a tilted mobius mount. Also looking into custom stand-offs. Hopefully these will be ready by the end of the week for testing.

Would anyone like to see side panels for the Lobster? It';s something I';ve been toying with for a while...
