Phil's low profile racing 300 Hex

Hi

I decided last night to build another 300 hex (will put a post up about the first one later), the first was an APM camera type ship, but i could see improvements to the frame/fitting so i came up with the following

I designed a set of spacers to fit on the arms and give me a 10mm gap between the frame plates, so i could fit all the esc and power wiring between the main plates (bit like the 250 pro quad)

I plated all the motor wires, soldered and mounted the ESC (Favourite 12a simonk with bec) and then got a bit carried away and plated the ESC/FC servo wires, made a small loom up for the esc

I have to admit to cheating, I cut into the heat shrink by 5mm on each side and folded it back a little to get to the motor wire pads on the esc, then cut and soldered the motor wires direct

with the bottom plate on, you can see the gap is tight but about right for the esc to sit in and not be squashed etc

I wanted a clean layout for this hex, so as well as replaceing the 35mm standoffs for 12mm ones, I used a d4r-II receiver via ppm (single wire set (3) connection to naze32, theres a naze32 in a new case design (will be available on the store shortly, with different lids for different pin configs)

with the DYS 1806 motors in gold and a carbon frame, its working for me  ~~ ~~ ::)

now time for the top plate

low and sleek

viewing side on to see the plate gap etc

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w190/thephiltrum/300%20hex/WP_20141213_014.jpg

the eagle eyed will have noticed there was only 2 screws in the naze32 case form earlier, this has now been sorted and all 4 are in, so there is no gap on the one edge (not that i was getting OCD at this stage lol)

As you can see there is plenty of room for a mini vtx, the longer term plan is to mount a mobius on the antivib plate that sits at the front top, and use that for recording and fpv feed

and finally (excuse the bad photo, ran out of light to take a nice one on the table), carbon 5x3 props and a 3d printed aerial mount

I used some previously designed spacers over the bolt ends as landing gear, the idea works well so i will design a smaller landing foot to go on shortly

first maden hop was a bit wobbly, realised what it was .. motors sounded like they were pulsing, im so used to using HQProp propellers that dont need balancing, i had not done these full carbon ones and the vibes were awful

quick spin on the blancer, bit of clear tape, and all good, hovers nicely, just need to play with the pid';s on the naze a little

first thing is to remove the expo on the naze, but thats my flying style

hope you like this
and for those who want one, I have stock of the parts, and do a build service if you need

its taken about 15-20  hours to get this done (including soldering at almost 2am lol)

Cheers
Phil

A very nice job there Phil, those mods really make the little hex look so much better than the stock. The sleek low-slung is easy on the eye.

What AUW did you get it down to, with/without battery?

What props are those?  If you get a chance try out the EMax CF props - mine didn';t need any balancing out of the packet and they make a really nice "buzz" as they cut the air.  My Pro 250 (from you) makes a rather menacing sound described by one frequent dog walker in the park I use as "... a large black angry wasp ...".  Well that works for me

Damn!

This is making me want a hex!

I have flew mini quads up to 450 sized quads.

What are mini hex';s like to fly? More stable I take it? And faster?

Get the right power train and yes, it can be more stable and faster.  Also it';s heavier and wider than a 250 so some of those gaps may appear larger than they really are!

philtrum

Designed a few more upgrades for it this morning, some new landing legs/pads (smaller lighter, extra black  :whistling: )

also angled the aerial mount so it looks like its moving quick when its standing still :D

I think it needs a milleninum falcon hyperdrive look too .. got something special in mind for that ;)

more pics soon

And for those wanting to make this, i will be making all the upgrade parts available ;)

Cheers for the comments, very appreciated

Really nice looking build. Looks good built with a low profile like that. Maybe one to add to my list of future wants!!>:D

tony

Wow 6 motors coming in u derived 500g is epic. Makestrel me feel a bit ashamed my emax came in just under 600 :( tilted motor mounts might be a good idea if low profile is the aim. Is whin pitched forward 45 degrees is still pretty much the same profile as a standard mini.

Hoping your ATC didn';t experience a computer systems failure and that you still had clearance to fly ::) ~~

Thats a real lightweight hex you';ve got on your hands there Phil.

ATC was good, weather was not, however had a flight in the back garden, pids are still stock but it few well, slight wobble occasional, but it was turbulent

being the forever tinkerer though, i thought ... hmm ... needs some lights and i was not happy with the aerial placement (as it clipped at one point and damaged an aerial)

so ....

fire up cad and the 3d printer

new front frame spacer with curved LED mount

new rear led curved mount

from underneath, also showing the new landing gear feet

with the LED switched on

3D printing makes life so much easier for the led bumpers.

I resorted to epoxy laminated foam to make mine for the Tesla

Well now you';ve got the motors in stock I';ve got no excuse for not getting started on mine. Will you be getting any of those nifty frame spacers into your shop in the next day or two so I can get some with the motors?

maiden video

was a bit windy and on default pids etc on the naze, needs a little tuning but its not massive

got a good turn of speed too :D

It easily lifted a 2200mAh Turnigy and NanoTech using the APM-equipped Hex that I had  from you Phil.  I didn';t get around to trying 3300mAh and higher though ::)

Very nice Phil, but if you drilled 5mm holes in the top plate you could pull your motor leads through them making it look even more tidier.
