Tri-Trooper 750mm Build

All going well my new frame will arrive this week, so thought would start a  build thread..

This frame is intended to be showerproof, offer long flight times (20min+) and to carry a GoPro on and H3-3D / GoPro in Waterpoof Housing / Sony Nex with 2 axis gimbal.

Its a folding design Y6 Coaxial..

The frame is a Tri-Trooper 750mm made by Rctimer..(Sky Trooper Clone), although better than original in a few respects. They also do the frame in a 900mm, but I felt this was bigger than I needed.. and prob just extra weight to lug around.

The Y6 is a good frame for our British weather as its very go0d in the wind.. the motors I chose are a trade off between flight time, pure power and ability to fly in windier conditions... the Rctimer X5 motors are U Motor clones as far as I can see.. 400KV and loads of power.

The frame has a built in power distribution, 12v UBEC, 5V UBEC and Lipo Alarm.. amazing value at @£120

[attachimg=1]

ESC';s are 40a OPTOS with SimonK.  they are  neat design as come with a LED module..

As the arms are 30mm, the ESC';s are designed to fit inside the arms...

A lot of the kit is coming from my old CarbonCore Y6...

Spec so far below..
•750mm Y6 Tri-Trooper
• Rctimer X5 400kv Motors
• DJI Style Folding Props with 15x5.2 props
•40amp OPTO SimonK ESC
•Naza V2
•H3-3D + GoPro 3 Black
•ImmersionRC 5.8Ghz VTX
•DJi Mini OSD
•Frsky X8R Rx with Lipo Monitors & telemetry
•Video Switch
•Pixim Seawold FPV cam (hoping to fit this into canopy)
•2 x Zippy 5800mah 6S Lipos

Not sure what the MTOM will be yet.. I figure around 4KG..

Pics and build to follow...

Amazing.. ordered on Sun.. dispatched on Monday.. arrived lunchtime today (Wed).. would def get DHL again from RCtimer..

All looks okay.. apart from missing one skid rubber cap..

Have mounted motors to arms, used some washers as the motor mounts are prone to splitting other wise..

The X5 motors look lost on the motor mounts.. but no bad thing as slots at bottom of motors are left free for cooling.. will also let air into the arms to cool the ESC';s

X5 Motors came in very nice boxes, much like the Tmotors, they come with a prop adapter, but can also fit DJI props direct to the motor bells.

Arms test fitted.. to see where I am going to mount the LED';s.

ESC';s soldered onto motor wires...  had to stagger cable length to make sure ESC sit in front of each other in the arm tubes..

Small screws that hold some of the plastic together have really soft heads..  head to ream plastic to make sure I could fit them.. no biggy..

Soldered on two EC5 Power cables for the two 6S lipos..

Naza V2 Mounted..  trying to figure out where to put everything.. .. mounted the GPS on a riser board above FC.. so it stays below the canopy.

Frame test built.. just looks like one landing gear skid rubber end missing...

Printed off a mount for the H3-3D that will hopefully keep it out of the way of the props.. (its a Sky Hero Design.. but fits fine)

Feels quite heavy already ..   wiring all to be tidied up once its all in...

I really like this. Can';t wait to see it done and flying  ::)

I';ve only just noticed, but Y6';s don';t have a tri style yaw mechanism  seems obvious now but I hadn';t thought about it.

So how does that work? Does it speed/slow all the top motors and do the opposite with the bottoms?

robshaw

Looks ace! You had power on that bottom plate yet?

looking forward to seeing this, would like another Y6 (I have the CarbonCore)
Was looking at the SkyHero but way overpriced and very heavy
This looks about right although I may go for the 600 (I assume its just the arm length that changes)

Getting there... all components now mounted.. Naza tested.. RX calibrated..  and have test armed motors (without props)

I used a Sky Hero design gimbal mount to move the H3-3D way forward.. and use some spacers to drop it down.. so GoPro clears the props and skids..  might need to remove the rubber mounts on the inertic plate though as seems a bit springy.... also bit worried about hanging 2 x 6S 5800mah lipos off 5 rubber mounts :-)

All ESC';s now calibrated..  gimbal wired up.. took me a while to do the gimbal.. as broke the stupid ribbon cable..  so converted the H3-3D to the same connector as the 2D .. so no more stupid cable...

Tested VTX, FPV cam, and GoPro Video feed.. all working with OSD...  mounted VTX on Gimbal Mount with Spiro facing down... just got LED';s on motor mounts to sort out now.. not too far away from a maiden..

Plugged in 6S lipo and checked all the board voltage monitors and leds.. all good... no magic smoke..:-)

Just weighed it.. complete frame without lipos, with all components and H3-3D and GoPro etc..   3Kg

2 x 5800mah 6S lipos = 1.6kg

So total weight will be 4.6kg.. slightly heavier than I thought..  but no issues with power.. Zippy Compacts would save some weight and help with flight times.. but happy with 20mins+

Ecalc on this MTOM and config below..

thats a pretty swish copter you have there!

Jumpy07

It has had its maiden.. just short hover.. got some interference on video feed will need to fix.. but other than that.. all good.. rock steady.. and a lot quieter than my old Y6.

Still not sure about lipo mount...  will need to have a think..

Mounted LED';s on either side of motor mounts...  Red on front of arms.. and green on rear.. appreciate thats not strictly correct.. but that is the way DJi have them on my S900.. so want to keep them the same.

Still have some white strobes to attach to canopy...  will need to wait until Sun now for some inflight pictures and more flight tests..

The lipo mount issue, is there any way you can put them side by side?

Nope.. too wide.. kind friend is gonna print me another inertic plate..  will stack them and mount the lipos above the bottom one methinks... (if it works lol)

Meant to say...

Anyone who is thinking of building a Y6 with a DJI controller...  when you wire up motors.. they all turn anti-clockwise..... when you put the bottom motors on .. as they are upside down .. they then turn clockwise....    all top props turn left.. and all bottom props turn right.....

Downside is on DJI.. is that you will need more bottom props if you have a bad landing.

Red= Bottom
Blue=Top

APM is completely different.. and in my view a better motor mapping..

Hope that makes sense   :blink :blink :blink

First real flight test this morning..

2 x 5000mah 6s = @20.3mins
1 x 5800mah 6s = @12mins

Def flew nicer with one lipo though..... but rock solid in air.... excuse handheld video.. forgot Tripod lol

Its a bit less sporty than the CarbonCore...  better for AP work..  esp with the longer flight times..

That looks a very stable , nice build indeedy !!! Do we still have the same redundancy as a conventional hex i.e motor fails it still flies ??? That frame looks exceptional good value ...

Regards rob
life is too short to worry about what others think !!!

www.Skynamite.co.uk

Jumpy07

Rob,

Yes same redundancy.. I can vouch it works.. had an ESC fail on my old Y6...  on the Naza (or any DJI FC) it starts to spin to keep stability.. u have to switch to course lock to get orientation to bring it back.. or you can just land it below where it is....

Now sorted out the video feed issues, was a couple of problems that were causing it... but antiference board for H3-3D made the biggest difference..

Got some S900 style prop holders.. which fit nicely on the arms and hold the folding props for transport... also got some nice fleecy covers for motors and GoPro.. for transport..

Another few flights today.. goes like a rocket.. I def prefer it with one lipo though.. flies lot nicer..

Have removed the rubber mounts on the intertic plate and fitted spacers.... gimbal plate was just moving too much.. and also stiffened up GoPro adapter with another spacer..Strobe fitted to top arm behind canopy..

Well pleased with it now.. and just needs flying more.. havent tried it in windy conditions yet.. so will report back when I have done that with some video...

Cheers Jimmy.. u cant beat the P2 for flight times at low cost..  but they are no good in the wind.. nor do they have much in the way of resilience in the event of motor / esc failure.. that';s where Y6';s come in.. that said coaxials are a compromise in terms of flight times... and I am running a lot of battery compared to a P2.  :-/

Can i be cheeky and ask what the ballpoint build cost so far has been? Also what are RcTimer delivery times like? I have there 800 frame quality is really good!

pheasant_plucker

Rctimer delivery by DHL is usually 3 to 4 days. In my experience any order over £100 gets sent DHL whether you select it or not.

Would recommend DHL.. as import costs are lower.. and you get items quicker..

The 750mm frame is only @£118 .. add motors, ESC';s , Naza, gimbal etc..  below is what I ordered from Rctimer..
