The height of irresponsibility (fortunately, not the UK)

No, I am not "Outraged of <fill-in-the-town> but this video came up on FB and I found the source on YouTube (where else?).

It just goes to illustrate the heights of stupidity that some people can attain.  Always assuming that this is in fact some kind of height bar that chummy has attained ...

Fortunately this is not in the UK.  I cannot imagine how many CAA, Military and Firearms laws have been broken in this one little episode.

As we approach 5th November, Diwali and other celebrations where fireworks are used I have to wonder if anyone in the UK will be tempted to replicate this! I certainly hope not.

Beleive it or, I don';t see anything wrong with that. They seem like the';re in the middle of nowhere. Quad never seemed to go over 10 metres altitude or so. The only real concern is they might start a forest fire or something. If one if them gets injured its on them

The damage is already done by posting it on YouTube. It doesn';t matter if they did it in a controlled environment as others won';t care.

I give it 4 years before Drones are banned. The more people post videos the more the hobby comes under the spotlight

Hands0n

To some rather great degree I go along with @xxpitt on the injury angle. As people we should be allowed to injure ourselves through our own stupidity, call it what you may.  We';re over-protected in the UK these days whereas other nations would find no issue with what is being portrayed in the video.

I am not at all concerned about reputation damage to the hobby as I do believe people, generally, can keep it real in that they won';t think we';re all at it doing this stuff.  And most of us would accept that there is a "lowest common denominator" out there for every single thing that goes on in life.  I am only disturbed at the British propensity to design laws geared around this same lowest common denominator, which I think is unhealthy for society at large.

I am not sure about the local regulations where this has been videoed.  But in the UK there is very likely to be a breach of the Firearms Act and the UK Police response could very well be lethal. Once equipped with even display ordnance the multi-rotor is very liable to become considered a weapon.  And that is where things, in the UK, are likely to rapidly turn pear shaped.

Fire hazard?  Yeah, I suppose so. Although probably no more so than anything else that involves naked flames and human operators ::)

Yet my overarching concern is the copycat - should someone in the UK think this is a spiffing wheeze they';re likely to feel rather uncomfortable within moments!

now we all know there are rules, and we all know we all break them. I thought the big thing on here was safety, which is obviously a very important subject. these guys are putting no ones safety at risk but their own. That';s ok by me. If they where in a busy park or in built up areas of course this would be completely reckless at the very least. I';m said to say i used to get up to much worse with fireworks as a young lad, and that was with out the aid of a multirotor.

I';m not sure on the CAA rules on mounting fireworks to a multirotor, but is it even in there? i probably just left myself open to be torn apart with that comment lol

kilby

I think there are rules and I think the rules even cover dropping things from models (even a dopey little parachutist at a few grams)

I don';t think they are doing any harm but none the less you have to be a but careful about the harmless fun you have these days

well all i can say is sad times! harmless fun should be exactly that harmless and fun

and i agree with youtube there will always be someone who see';s it a tkes it a step furter. but that is the fault of the person who takes it that step further not the fault of the person having the original harmless fun. If a kid starts doing wheelies down my street on a motor bike and crashes into my car, i';m not going to blame evil Knievel for it

I too don';t see any real problem with what they are doing other than the stupidity of showing off with it on the Internet!  If they get hurt... tough! If they start a fire provided they get suitable punishment ok!
What really worries me is what they might do next to top this one!!!

nub

Point and click.

Monkey see, Monkey do.

doofer

Yeah, probably Darwin Award material but they were on private property, they were obviously aware of what was happening, they had some protection in the shape of a helmet with eye protection, the fireworks were not fired at high velocity enough to cause serious injury so I don';t really see a problem with what they were doing. Kids are going be kids...

Had they done that in a public place on unsuspecting members of the public then it would definitely be a different story.

miniconverter

Looks like awesome fun to me. Think I might consider rocket launchers on the 680 build.

But strapping fireworks to a quad.... fun, but like the guy who got hit in the eye on that other video, it';s gonna end in tears.  :slap:

Aye, I remember the days, rocket tubes on the pushbikes front forks, stripping bangers to make bigger ones etc, people have ALWAYS played with fireworks one way or another.
Not forgetting the rope swings over 60 foot drops, knowing damnwell if it breaks your breaking something, or the river rope swing, light it, take turns, see who gets a dunking, playing chicken with the damn great Bull in the field, then run like hell and hope you out run it.
Hanging the fire hose over the side of the multistory carpark, and slide it.

In those days much of what we did and I dare say most would have done, was risky, dangerous, and a health and safety nightmare now, but it was fun, looking back you can cringe, but, in those days we didn';t have YouTube......

The risky fun is just the same, but just different means to do it.

Friskle I agree and probably did all that and more but none of what you mentioned were breaking any laws. It was just a case of kids being kids like we all were and some, me included never really grew up! All we did was risk our own health, safety and a good telling off when you went home with your clothes in tatters and covered in mud and god knows what else. I have no problem with that but when idiots blatantly flout laws and put at risk not just a hobby but a business for some, that';s when I have an issue with it.

I';m not a grumpy old man by any means though that';s how I may come across with this. I';m 38, still take my kids conker picking every year, build go karts, climb trees, build rope swings and generally lark about when some say I should know better at my age! As I see it growing up is overrated and for me this crosses that line between larking about and going too far.

I think thats it really. We see this stuff on YouTube and are instantly driven to a defensive response in protection of our treasured hobby.  I expect that we all have a perception of how fragile the continued existence of our hobby could be if legislators, driven by media and narrow-interest groups and lobbyists, get involved and start casting new preventative laws.  There is precedence!

So riding down the road firing rockets from a bike, was not breaking any laws...i think probably it was.

Risking your own Health and Safety ?  is that not what they in the video were doing?  was there anyone else around ?  No, was it a busy area ? No , it actually looked extremely private.

i understand about rules, but really, its about time some people got off there high and mightiness and leave people alone to do what they want, within reason of course. As where they were, was not causing any issue to anyone else but themselves.

The problem is, the deciding what someone else can or cannot do is really going beyond a joke.

Back then the police would have probably given you a clip round the ear then walked you back home where you';d have got another thick ear. That was my childhood anyway but can';t speak for yours.

I don';t recall ever mentioning the health and safety of anyone else so not sure where you';re coming from there I';m afraid.

These are just my opinions which I choose to give on a public forum. In no way am I telling anyone what they can or can';t do nor would I ever. In fact, I don';t recall anyone here telling them not to do it, do you?

And so, my opinion, when they chose to strap fireworks to their multi and launch them at each other, brilliant. Great fun, a good laugh and probably something I would have done myself if such tech was available when I was a kid. They were in no ones way, not causing a nuisance or putting at risk members of the public so again, great. But, my issue is this. The second they put that clip on Youtube it put at risk the rules, regs and laws of multis for all of us. Once it';s in the public domain the CAA/FAA will have no choice but to act on it. Fireworks on multis + brilliant fun. Posting it on YouTube = stupid.

Again, these are just my views on it. I';m in no position to tell anyone what they can or can';t do and I never will.

Language of my day, no one thought anything about it. My girlfriend at the time, I was 16, had a fully spastic younger brother.  No one seemed to be bothered with the use of language to such a high degree as today.

That said, fast forward to 2014, one of my team is a young lady with full blown MS. She truly is an inspiration how she handles the ups and downs of the dreadful disease with a courage well beyond her years.  She calls herself "the team spaz" ... which us able-bodied have got used to. But outside, in public, the look of shock on peoples faces is legend.  Especially when they see it is her herself making the statement!   We all love her dearly
