New Forum 'Area' proposal

Dear multi-rotor afficianado';s
I would like to propose a brand new forum section, or indeed area.  It would be (I suggest) called simply ';Confessional';.
Why?  Well, I think it may provide the hapless transgressor with some degree of solace and spiritual forgiveness for ones ';multi-rotor misdemeanours';, whatever the actuality or severity of that deed may be, safe in the knowledge that this failing, or act of sheer dumbness, will be heard, and understood, but neither judged nor divulged to any other living soul.
So, we begin with what I believe to be the customary salutation:

"Forgive me father for I have sinned!" (I';m not RC BTW)

Last Saturday, I made the finishing touches to my by now well documented home brewed 250 mini quad, so far so good.  It looked beautiful in it';s latest guise of black G10 body and upgraded full carbon arms.
Emax motors & 12a esc';s completed the CC3D controlled pint sized bush slicer and towpath terror.

It was the next step that still makes me gasp with pure astonishment, (and has in turn prompted me to make this request for forgiveness and understanding).
So I removed the two redundant wires (+and-) from 3 of the esc';s, and proceeded to parcel them up in heat shrink, so they wouldn';t short out.  I then attempted to auto calibrate the esc';s one by one, checking rotation as I went.
The first motor checked out fine, I set the start up level in the gui and then moved to the next.  I have documented this in my post ';back to black'; so will not labour things here, it appeared that 3 esc';s had failed catastrophically OOTB so to speak.
It is now Monday eve as I write, but it was approximately 16:15 today, when the reckoning of what I had done hit me like a bolt from the blue!
I had simply parcelled the live & negative 5v BEC leads together, so they were shorting out!!

Anyhow, the story has now had a happy ending, as my act of sheer seniority and mental retardation has not resulted in any lasting damage, at least not to the hardware that is, my pride may take a little longer to heal!

I offer this suggestion to the forum in the hope that others may find comfort from their blooper/snafu/gaffe/boo-boo/slipup/erratum/etc/etc.

Andy

P.S if this autocomplete turns ';esc'; to ';sec'; one more time....agh!!!

I think it';s a great idea!
If we';ve made booboos it would be good to have a single area for reference for others for informative purposes,  also I think to share with others lightens your mood.

I have a confession to make, keen to get my tri on the move I managed to cyano my new yaw mechanism on the rear arm of the frame on the p155!
Couldn';t get it off without breaking bits so now have to make the whole rear arm again!
Next time I';m going to make a simple jig to assemble it with,  cyano is great but it';s so unforgiving of misplacement of the bits you';re trying to stick together!

DebianDave

Here';s my story... When I was first starting out I built an RCExplorer 2.5 style tricopter.  This was my first multi even before the Hubsan X4 and I had major setbacks from ordering the wrong bits, not ordering bits I needed and then waiting weeks to get said bits. The first time I had her out in the wild with props on, it was obvious something wasn';t right and it took ages for me to work out I had the yaw direction the wrong way round (obvious now  :embarrassed).

After this right of passage I felt really please with myself, so pleased that I went to put another pack on her for some ACTUAL FLYING  :o Nonchalantly, I laid the TX on the bench I was sat at and wandered over to my tri with fresh lipo in hand, ready to swap it out. Naturally, I hadn';t disarmed it, that would be silly  Just as I got over to her, a whole 10m or so from the bench, she roared into life and shot directly up like an absolute rocket (10" props, DT750 motors, minimal loadout)... To say I was shocked was a little bit of an understatement, it had practically given my eyebrows a pruning. Looking back at the TX on the bench hoping for answers, I see the old codger who had been walking his dog. I had mentally noted his presence earlier but had been distracted by awesome. He was holding my TX looking equally puzzled. He';d wandered the length of the field to see what I was up to and decided it would be fun to see what the transmitter was all about  :banghead:

I said something like kill the throttle you ****, he took what seemed an aged to do so looking at the TX like old folk often do when confronted with something which isn';t the Daily Mail. Long story short, my tri fell from it';s lofty position back down onto the field resulting in two broken arms and two broken props. To this day, I have never flown anything as high

When I built the Tesla quad (the one that buggered off) I powered it up for the first test.

Added power and it flipped, breaking 3 props, checked the motor directions,  checked motor order, and if I had the right props on the right way up.

All looked fine so powered up again and snapped 3 more props.

Turns out I had rotated the Naze32 by 90°.

Still doesn';t explain why I only break reverse rotation props though

I';ve got a load of 9*4.5 R';s we should organise a swap shop for props ::)

This is a great idea :) Here';s mine:

I got my first quad build finished and was very keen to get it in the air. Bear in mind, this was the first multi I';d ever flown...and it was a homebuilt, own design. Proper baptism of fire stuff.

Anyway, I managed to get the quad hovering jitter free at about 8ft. Started testing everything else, then suddenly it started jittering before pitching violently and plowing straight into the floor, breaking 2 props and 2 legs. I replaced the props, mystified, and flew it again. Same result, and another 3 props sacrificed.

It was then that I realised: due to my 8 channel T8J, and use of Sbus to the SuperX, my gimbal pitch control was mapped onto channel 7...and so was the RC gain. So adjusting the gimbal in flight was tripling the gain at the same time  :banghead:

Solution was to replace the Sbus cable with 8 regular cables. Much less tidy, much less crashy
I design things. Sometimes they get made. And very occasionally, they actually work!

Sadly it';s 5x3s that I always break, though then again I have only ever broken the R 8x4.5s on the 450 as well.

Hang on is there an X-Files section?

It must be a quad phenomenonumnom. 95% of my crashes involve breaking at least my rear 5030R...

NEVER, EVER  try and cut both the power leads from a lipo AT THE SAME TIME, ';cause all it does is make a loud noise and melts the end of your cutters........

Due to a very strict lecturer at college any time I remove a wire from a connector or even cut a wire I habitually add some heatshrink tubing to the potentially offending item.

All my ESC';s in the 250 are removed from the connector but have heatshrink over the end (mainly in case something happens to the cable that I';m using to power the NAZE)
