The "go to Gimbal" for a GoPro

What is the best Gimbal for the GoPro.

I am happy to learn the configuration and tuning. Not interested in having to file holes, diagnose troublesome motors etc.

Complicated i am happy with, poor quality i have no time for.

I bought the Quanum from HK and it was very easy to install and setup and works like a dream.
This was after buying the Tarot T-2D, I burnt out 2 controller boards trying to get it working, I gave up, I never got any use out of it, it';s sitting in a box gloating at me!

Bargain!

The DYS 3 Axis gimbal is very good

http://www.banggood.com/DYS-3-axis-Smart-Gopro-BL-Gimbal-For-FPV-Aerial-Photography-p-920668.html

£119 with free postage, I managed to find it in their UK warehouse for £113 and got free shipping and it arrived 2 days later  ~~

Worked out the box, just plugged in a 3s Lipo to the JST connector, excellent quality made from Ali and carbon fibre, uses the BaseCam firmware so is very easy to setup (I have always hated the thought of having to set a gimbal up but this made it all simple)

LSP uses one on his QAV400

Did you give up on the 3d printed one ?

Did you give up on the 3d printed one ?

I did Barney, as I had never had a gimbal before it was a very steep learning curve and I spent/wasted many hours reading and fiddling with the gimbal to get it even close to ';working';v turns out I had used the wrong type wire to extend the IMU so I was against it from the start lol. I thank you for all your effort and time that you put in. Now that I have a working gimbal and some better experience I can go back to the 3d printed one with new knowledge and skills to get it working  :crossfingers: its not a lost cause  ::)

DJI H3-2D is an excellent choice if you use DJI gear.  Pricey, but very good.

I was looking at the Dji thing but there is a question over only working with their FC. I use pixhawk.

the h3-2d has been discontinued. The h3-3d is the current model.
It';s still expensive and cheapest I';ve seen it is £220 odd.
Looking for one myself for my hero3+

If you were DJI (rather than pixhawk) the H33D is amazing, I';ve had some stunning results in horrible windy conditions out of mine.  When combined with DJI hub stuff (iOSD, groundstation etc) it all just "works" completely out of the box. Hold is very strong and correction is brilliant. No messing around with any software at all.

Thanks balders, the Pixhawk was the clincher for me when i built my Hex. I wont consider changing that out so stuff has to either work with it or be agnostic to it.

Eventually i intend to have a gimbal that will take a serious camera. I had planned to wait and jump in at that level but dont really consider this a good idea at the moment. So GoPro it is, learn whether i can do AP and then bingo jump in full tilt.

Hm, well dji are still promoting it on their website, and it';s still being sold.  I';m not sure 3 axis is always necessary anyhow, should be up to the purchaser really.

You certainly won';t regret it. I';ve had clients take gopro footage over dslr footage. One bought my footage and told their official video maker to make my footage work in place of his Black Magic footage. So they ain';t exactly bad cameras :) If they were narrower angle to start with they would be perfect for multi rotor use.

Thanks again Balders
I kept trying to dismiss the GoPro as not a serious camera for anything commercial but its very difficult to ignore them. Having said that i am nowhere near having anyone pay for footage or stills of mine.
Blackmagic are in my sights in some form and i regret not jumping in with their offer on the Pocket but hey ho !

Which version of Blackmagic footage did your client reject and, if you dont mind me asking, had it been through Davinci resolve.

No idea on the details, all it know is the official camera man dismissed my footage as not being of high enough quality, only to be told by the client to use mine once he had seen it. Ha ha. Camera snobbery if you ask me.  A lot of people dismiss it because of the silly wide angle and size of the thing, but they are certainly not a toy camera. To get much better you have to invest big bucks, not only on the camera, but on the gimbal too. Bear in mind the zenmuse gh4 gimbal retails at around £2000 and you can get the go pro zenmuse as stated for just over 200. Punches far outside of its weight.

Took delivery of the DYS 3 axis gimbal for GoPro, looks well made so far. First i need to bolt it on then see how we go.

I wonder if the GoPro 4 is going to need a different gimbal when it arrives soon ?

That';s a very good question Desmo. If they decide to change the footprint or connection placement/type that would be a major headache for lots of folk, me included. :hmm:

I';m deffo going to get one when it arrives, i think their "delay until march 15" is a red herring to shift the old stock. We shall see.

Balders

Have go pro announced any official details on the gp4 yet?

Here is my ';Out the box'; test of the DYS Smart 3 Axis Gimbal, I knew nothing about these gimbals before starting and I am on a steep learning curve...

The flight was on a very windy day, I doubt I would of flown on that day if it was not for the gimbal test

I wouldn';t want to be one of those ';lucky'; first owners of GoPro';s latest money spinner, that';s why I bought the Hero 3 Black, not 3+ that had huge issues focussing on anything beyond the end of your surfboard/motorcycle handlebars/parachute cam, arms reach ';selfie'; going over the angel falls etc!
Still, once you';ve tasted GP';s now legendary ';customer support'; for yourselves, you';ll know what I';m on about.

I';m upgrading to 3+ black, but only cause I have had my hero 1 for ages, and, well, its getting a bit tired now, plus want the WiFi option for other things.

As for the 4, I fail to see much point, you can see it already though, the people who are more than happy with thier 3`s, well a lot of them, will still be clambering to get one.
