Spider Quad rebuilt

After an unexplained fallout from the sky, the bits finally arrived for me to put my Spider back together.  A few modifications this time around to help improve things...

  • Installed APM Power module - I was running the APM via a HK UBEC before, but still this may have caused a brownout that caused it to fall from the sky, so hoping the power module will be a bit more robust.
  • Moved the Gimbal back a bit and moved the controller board to inside the frame - the crash caused the bottom plate to crack at the front where the gimbal was mounted.  Also bring the weight away from the front a little
I';ve hovered it in the garden with three full batteries and all seems well.  Footage from the video seems jello free with the gimbal doing a good job.
Still confused as to what happened last time - the only difference I did when it fell was that I was trying out Alt Hold mode.  It seem to work really well for two flights and on the third is when it fell.

The only other downside, I';ve gone a ruptured my Achilles tendon which has just had an operation to repair it.  On crutches for the next six weeks and essentially grounded from all fun things :(

I kind of miss my spider frame

Hi Pete - Really like the look of your build. I am just about to put a Spider together for some aerial GoPro fun. What is the spec. for the motors/props and ESC';s on yours? I am using a HK450 quad at the moment with prodrive 2826 1000kvs and 9x4.7 props. I use HK 30A Blue series flashed with SimonK. Using a 5000 3S battery and an all up weight (including GoPro but no gimble) of 1.32K, it all works OK but a bit cramped.

How does your set up fly.

It';s seriously nothing fancy, done very much on the cheap.

Frame from RCTimer - http://www.rctimer.com/product_1055.html
Motors are just cheapo units from eBay, 1000Kv A2212 spec - various resellers on eBay
ESCs - Sky Walker 20A units
Latest addition is the Gimbal, which is the GoodLuckBuy unit that seems ok.  I';ve mounted the Controller Board inside the actual frame itself.
Flight Controller is APM 2.5, now coupled with a APM Power Module
I run it with 3S Lipos.
Props are 9x4.7 - anything really I can get my hands on.

I';ve just also got hold of the HobbyKing FPV Foam Goggle thingys - another cheap jump at FPV !!!  ;D

Can';t fly though at the moment, due to my injury.  But the float around the garden all seems ok and the video is working very well.

As it I';m getting more and more into this hobby, I';m going to start pushing for better components - I';m just really learning as I go with cheaper components until I stop crashing or trees stop jumping out in front of me!
