Mission Aborted

So I have the rest of this week off work - totally to myself - to be self-indulgent all I want until Saturday and Sunday when "normality" resumes [for me].

In my first bid at getting some video for the forum Video Montage I decided to take my first trip ever to a massive local Forrestry Commission park nearby as they have one or two items of particular interest that might fit the bill.  All morning it has been sunny, scattered cloud, almost no wind at all judging by the flag on a pole three doors down.

Arriving at Jeskyns I observed that it had clouded up, no matter though, thats okay for FPV.  Walking to my spot of interest it started drizzling.  Grollocks :(  I found shelter underneath a treehouse/climbing-thing set aside for kids nearby. Nervous mothers looked at me as I entered the enclosure. I paid them and the kids no attention, and sat on the benches underneath the elevated house.

A while later I wandered over to the place of interest and set up ... the wind got up a little (euphemism for "a lot"). No matter, can';t be quitting now.  Its taken me immense courage mustering to get this far. I';ve visited Jeskyns several times and chickened out.   :help: Immediately I donned the FatShark goggles the heavens decided to tiddle on me again, and didn';t stop until I gave up as I felt the water penetrate my non-waterproof clothing.  By then, however, I had flown FPV in what felt like 20mph winds for two LiPos worth. I surely must have a few yards of footage that can be used.

Walking back to the car with my gear hastily packed I discovered, on dismantling the GoPro from the quad that I didn';t have the SD card in it! I';d taken it out to erase all the files and had forgotten to put it back in!   :banghead:  Also, as if to rub salt into the wound, the cloud broke and brilliant sunshine descended upon me.   :nananana:

I got into the car and drove home ... Lets try this again tomorrow maybe  ::)

Content Warning: The following video contains no footage of flying. It is included merely to show what I was up against.  :blink

lol doh!

doesn';t the gopro having a flashing light or something to tell you that there no card inserted?

hopefully you have a bit better luck tomorrow

It certainly does @nub, my man.  But I don';t trouble myself with such trifling minutae. :slap:  :banghead:

The thing is, I';d already taken my glasses off and popped the FatSharks on my forehead, so everything is rather soft focus  :help: until I pop the goggles on.

On reflection, the video would have been rather bouncy-bouncy, even with the Naza M Lite doing its absolute best to keep the Firelfy pinned to the spot (which it did rather well I must say).

What a bummer. The GoPro as good as they are seem to have a cloud of misfortune hanging over them most of the time.

While I have never forgotten the card I have (too many times to count) turned up and found it has no charge :slap:

I bought a pair of batteries and a standalone charger on eBay for the GoPro. So I always go out armed with three fully charged batteries, expecting the worst.  I don';t power the GoPro (its a Hero 3 Black) from the quad, preferring to keep all of the available juice for staying aloft.

I definitely hear ya about the GoPro';s "cloud of misfortune" ... this is my first experience of it, but the forums are legend with tales of woe about that camera ::)

Mission achieved today - still the howling wind but no rain so I took the chance while I could.  Here';s a teaser/trailer of what I captured.

Five flights made, there has got to be some reasonable footage somewhere in there.  This is from the first flight, it was quite gusty as you can tell.

There are four "men" but two seem to have lost their top parts, I guess through decay as the wood doesn';t look treated. A shame really, as they looked quite imposing when first up.
