Does the Pixhawk run the same software?

Sorry when I said ';proper'; I really meant ';well-made';. I read somewhere that there were a few cheaply done ones floating about....

Yes it does. And will be the hardware basis to carry on the development of Arducopter software into the future.

Interesting. Seem to be out of stock everywhere I';ve found though. I really should calm down and just enjoy my KK, but all these tinkering possibilities get me going!

Am I also right in thinking that Naza/APM work for + or X but can';t be tuned for something like a deadcat? Or is that more guff that I read somewhere?

I don';t understand that at all. Sounds like you';ve picked up some Internet fluff ::)  The Naza and APM are widely used in Deadcat air frames.  I';m using a Naza M Lite on an Alien 450 (deadcat-like).  Then when you look at TBS Discovery and the like you';ll more often than not see them flying Naza FCs.   As for the APM, I reckon you could fly that on a lolly stick   It seems to support so many different air frame types.

Welcome to the world of multi-rotors mate   There is so much choice and possibility, limited pretty much only by your own imagination and size of your wallet.  :whistling:

I think you';re safe with RCTimer but might be a bit wary of unbranded Chinese clones.  It really is down to what components and manufacturing quality are apparent. The board and software are open source [afaik] and so there are several sources to be had.  I';ve not been let down by RCTimer versions.   But do shop around, prices vary enormously and bargains pop up every now and again.

Thanks Danny. About the deadcat, I thought you had to adjust the mixes to get really good flight because the motors have been moved from the standard equidistant positions, and the Naza software has no way to do that?

Given how cheap the Naza M Lite + GPS is I';m tempted....

Hands0n

Regarding the deadcat design - you are right, the Naza and APM are unaware of the specific difference in rotor arm geometry compared to say one that is equidistant. But it seems to not matter, the FCs are quite able to control the flight of that frame design.

The most important would be to get the FC mounted at the COG so that it can accurately control the motors for stability etc.

Oh I';m sure they can control it (as can a KK without tuning). But with the KK at least you get some weird effects like moving forward when doing a hard vertical move, and some strange oscillations coming out of turns.

Do you not get that with an APM or Naza despite not having tuned for the geometry then?

edit ... Sorry jumped back in without checking post above....
naza lite in stock at fpv

http://www.firstpersonview.co.uk/quadcopters/flight-controllers/dji-naza-m-lite-flight-controller-gps

with regards to deadcat frame, my naza has been on a alien frame and reptile (very similar to TBS) and sk450 and the deadcat conversion until i went back to the tarot frame to swing a blg underneath.

All well controlled by the naza as well as the kk
Carbon Tricopter with KK2 mini because you have to own a Tri and Falcon Evo FPV (rebuild again) with fatshark 600mw vtx & pz2040 cam. New addition (hidden from the missus!) 250 quad.

You can buy them ready soldered, but it does cost a little bit more. Cases for them are cheap enough in the UK, although often in short supply.
