Tried my 808#16 cam on my 450 quad today using the same mounting method I used on my Twister, result were spectacularly carp! See the video - also I came seriously close to loosing my quad, as I took off it was fairly sheltered where I was but once I got above the tree line it was wild! I was blown well off course I intended to go but where a few months ago I would have probably given up and throttled down and set off to find it I powered up to full throttle and watched carefully what my inputs were doing. Well as luck would have it I got it back in one piece!
Enjoy!!!

I hope that was down to the camera mounting otherwise I think you must have lost half a blade!

That';s the best jello I';ve seen yet!

The wind certainly looks like it took it fast, I assume you didn';t intend to cross the road? Well done on flying it back!

guest325

Yes bodge it and scarper at work, 1/2" piece of foam and a big rubber band!
Well pleased with myself managing to get it back, few brown trouser moments though; I had no intention of it flying over the road or the college for that matter but it did and I had to sort it out!

Wow, got to be the worst I have seen.  Almost like watching it through ripping water.

Nice recovery though

I have to say, that';s a good recovery ~~

In the few short weeks I';ve known you Darrell that';s the 3rd time (that I know of) where you';ve snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.  Well done on another skin of teeth rescue ~~

Have you fitted a lost alarm to it yet?

nub

gah i couldn';t watch it all the way through i about lost my tea
Point and click.

My eyesight must be worse than I feared (or the camera seriously distorts distance perception) because I';m pretty sure I wouldn';t be able to see my hex at those distances, let alone know it';s orientation. Very well done on bringing it home safely!

It wasn';t easy for me - I have to wear varifocals; orientation at what must have been 200-300 metres was not easy, the only way I could see it was by using a lot of one way or t';other stick, plus the wind was doing its best to not let me get it back - one thing that was lucky was that I had got plenty of battery capacity left - when I';d landed it I checked and there was still 47% remaining. I would have had no chance whatsoever if I';d have been half way through the flight.

jwl940

Would your RTL not have brought it home?

Thinking more on that subject when RTL is activated does it rotate the quad so it flies back to the launch position in a forward direction or does it just throw in a left or right-hand down a bit as necessary so it returns home sideways/backwards?  And my next question, can you speed up RTL by increasing the throttle or has control been completely handed over to the machine?

I tried it and it just hadn';t got the legs to get it back - so yes it does point it the right was and no you can';t alter the speed, so basically I had to drive it home. When I hit rtl it was still going away from me so I then had to abandon it and find out which way it was really pointing, it was a bl**dy nightmare come true!!!

guest325

Thought I would revisit this one - got it in the air again with different method of mounting, much better but still nowhere good enough - I think it';s probably too soft so I';m going to try different materials to see what happens.

Blimey Darrell, I nearly lost my lunch watching that first post video of your near miss.  I';m at the office and getting strange looks as I was literally flying the damned thing at my desk (with the mouse!!!).  Having had two near-misses and one total loss I';m particularly sensitive to this stuff right now - this post needs a Health Warning

You seriously did well getting that back, I have to say.

When I had my first near-miss I was flying a HK MultiWii Pro 2 - I was able to add power in to the RTL which helped it combat the wind, it was only just holding its own, making no progress towards me.   The second was with my Naza M Lite quad, and it did seem to know to up the power to the rotors to combat the buffeting wind.  Although at some wind speed there will be nothing you can do to get it back other than land and seek it out.

Not sure what to suggest re the Jello other than some isolation and dampening combined.  It was a lot better in the second video, those look like very high frequency vibrations getting through.

Didn';t use any aids on the second video,  no problems there at all - getting used to flying in wind now it was about 15mph with gusts of dunno what.
I have the view that if I can fly it like that in those conditions I should have nothing to worry about.

Gav

Just watched your opening video.  WOW MAN LOL.

I';d certainly go along with that. If you';ve got used to handling an aircraft in such hostile conditions then you';re probably set for anything.

Just watched that video again, at home, on the settee, relaxing ... and it still has me creeped out  ::)  Unbelievable you actually got that back on manual.

Believe me my legs were like rubber - it was a very good thing for me to have done though I';m a lot more confident now than I was especially considering the conditions. I think one of the things that changed my mind-set about it was my wife who came along with me (for a change) who was wittering on that "It';s gone, you';ve lost it - all that bl@@dy money down the drain" just had to do it didn';t I???
Seriously I';m of the firm belief now that these wonderful toys will fly in pretty harsh conditions and that the main limiting factor is it';s pilot, OK if there isn';t enough power available then trying it would be foolish. I';ve been to our Thursday night meets at our club a couple of times now where I';ve been the only one flying - why? the rest are fixed wing and can';t hack the sort of conditions I can fly in with my quad.....great innit especially when you consider that I';m the least experienced pilot there!!!

oops

Darrell, do you still have the video in the link, as it';s not on the link site.  I';m getting my TQ on Wednesday and I';m keen to see flight mastery in action.  Although you had jello on thisaircraft, did that foam mount work ok on the Twister?

I';ve now deleted that video, just seemed pointless to keep it.
That way of mounting the keyfob cam was fine on the Twister, worked a treat!
