After my last prang one of the strands in one of my motor cables has broke. Is this fixable?

nub

suppose u could maybe rap some wire around it and give it a good soldering, not sure how long it will hold/work for though.
Point and click.

Monkey see, Monkey do.

dp106

Yeah and the last thing I want is another mid flight failure :-S Not worth the risk then probably

Ross

It should solder ok if ( if you can solder properly ) and the wires  are laid side by side and you use proper diameter heatshrink to cover.
Let's be careful out there.
SAFETY is.. NO accident.

nub

yup as long as make sure it';s secure and not flexing/moving about much it should hold fine.
Point and click.

thats an easy fix, trim the 3 wires to the same length, tin them, solder a new length of magnet wire to the exposed wires, recover with heatshrink..
take your time..
dont grow up,just buy bigger toys!!!!

My soldering attempts so far have failed, the solder just rolls off the wire. Someone here at work suggested the wire is coated and I would need to remove that first

The wire will certainly be coated or varnished. You will need to carefully scrape the ends (gently to not cut) until it looks like copper, not brass. Then you should be able to solder tin the ends!  ~~

Make sure that you don';t nick the copper as that will be likely to induce a break later on!

As Chris said, they enamel coating to insulate them while wound on the motor. I would borrow a fine emery board from a lady friend, leaving the wire on the work surface pull the emery  board towards you cleaning the last 1\4 inch or so, remember to rotate the wire to clean all round. You could practice on the bit you cut off :)

I';m not sure how this guy got away with it but he just used a very hot iron to burn the enamel off

Yes when I was winding motors I used to scrape the enamel off with a scalpel blade - it takes ages ... but the emery board is a good tip ...

If I remember correctly motor wire is not very forgiving - it';s a devil to solder (as we';ve seen) and it goes brittle very quickly ... it doesn';t like being messed with so if you bend it too much it snaps especially when its been hot. So be careful.

Personally I think I';d ditch the motor as I';d never trust it after all this  ;)

A replacement arrived in the post yesterday :-) With the risks involved and my dodgy soldering skills I';m not going to risk it.
