Advice on buying - Possibly a Proflight UFO?

Hello,
This is my first, so hello to all, and thank you for taking the time to read it.

I';m looking to buy my son a drone/quadcopter for Christmas and was recommended a Proflight UFO currently on sale on Drones Direct for £58.

He is 13, but I suspect I';ll use it with him (at least until he is more skilled at piloting one)

Does this drone seem like a good purchase for the price? Its definitely the very top end of budget...

Thanks again,

Matilda

iRobot

Hi

I would personally go for something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B009M1PO7W/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480332287&sr=8-1&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=hubsan+x4&dpPl=1&dpID=31k3VGPtOxL&ref=plSrch you can buy extra lipo batteries and spare propellers  from most RC shops or ebay really cheap. Loads of spares available to, or  just for incase you break anything.
Dead easy to fly, with loads of tutorials on YouTube and such.

THanks iR and 26.
I had been looking at the hubsan, it seems to have glowing reviews everywhere. Will we miss the FPV though? Seems like a fun feature?

Two-Six

Well, the FPV on the UFO quad is via a smart phone.  Two big things about this is there will be a considerable lag between what the camera sees  and what you see on the screen, so using the image to fly with will not be ideal at all and also you need to use your tiny smart-phone screen which is world away from some dedicated FPV goggles.  It really won';t be very immersive especially in any kind of bright sunlight

I know everybody wants a camera but really you would be better off getting a non camera quad to learn to fly quads with then look to organising some more specialised kit in the future.

You need to be looking at the £300 sort of price range for "proper" FPV and more for aerial video and photography.

To be honest you will want your son to be able to fly a small quad well first before letting him loose on a capable FPV quad.

I would say that the bare minimum you should be looking at for FPV fun is about £150 (mini quad + transmitter + goggles). With a budget of up to £50, stick with a decent quality line of sight quad that can be flown inside and out (like the Hubsan) and get some spare propellers and batteries.
