Hi ppl!!

Just after a recommendation for lipo charge bag!!

The more I read the more I';m worried about one of these things catching fire on the kitchen side!! I anyways charge them on a plate anyways but I dread he thought of the missis or kid getting hurt!!

http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lipo-Safe-Bag-Large-Medium-Small-Charging-RC-Battery-Fireproof-Storage-Retardant-/262449790436?nav=SEARCH&varId=561252439099

Anyone have one of these was gonna get the large 1!!

And does anyone store them in lipo bags?? Or is that a little over kill??

Thanks

ched

I would not leave a lipo charging unattended i.e. with me in the room. Fortunately I have a fire extinguisher in the next room (actually 5) and a fire blanket upstairs.

You can use an old ammo box and 2 layers of plaster board inside. 2 layers of plaster board is normally rated as 60min fire protection. So it should be enough to protect you from the heat while you remove the ammo box outside into a safe area.
I try :-)

I keep mine in a concrete building block that has holes in it covered by a paving slab and that sits on a steel plate.

To be extra safe you could get a concrete block and charge the lipos in that and also place plastic bags filled with sand over the charging batteries.

If things go wrong the bags will melt and dump their sand over the flaming lipo.

I don';t do this but I do use a charge bag most of the time and try to be "around" charging lipos "most" of the time.  I could do better in this area to be honest.

I also usually do 1c balance charges so I like to think that is probably less risky that charging them hard.

I charge them in the Kitchen at the minute and check on them every 10-20 mins or so turn them off when there done!! Think il invest in the bag!!

And think about a better way to store them!!

This may be a stupid thought but could you charge them in a cold oven with the door closed? That way if they did go up in fames they would be in a relatively safe space that is designed to take some heat.
Just remember to tell the misses not to turn the oven on!!!!!

See now that is actually a really sensible idea!! If I lived on my own or if I wasent a forgetful person!! The possibilities of anyone else turning the oven on I suppose are minimal cus you would see them as soon as you went to put something in!!

My 2 year old on the other hand my not think about the fact that daddy is charging batteries in the oven 😂 if she decides to turn the oven on!! Could end very badly so from that point of view I think that';s a no no!!  But defiantly a good idea!! Maybe ... lol

I charge mine in the LiPo bag and keep an eye on them. Generally, they';re done in the lounge while I';m watching telly. I charge at 1C, so each one takes an hour.

The thing is, we see a fair few vids of various batteries going up in smoke, but, in reality, the risk is small.... but the outcome can be disastrous.  :blink

I store them in the bag as well. No problems yet, touch wood

Ammo box, remove the seal and you';ll be good!

Don';t leave the seal in it becomes a bomb!

I';ve got one of the team blacksheep bags which is pretty good. It';s just black and doesn';t scream ';fire risk'; which is pretty good if you ever decide to travel with lipos.
I';ve read up a lot on lipo batteries and from what I';ve seen, if you want an indicator for the risk of a battery turning into a flambino, then keep an eye on its internal resistance. The measurement of this is a function of some chargers and its worth doing as its the best indicator of cell health. It';s the IR that causes the heat during charging/discharging that leads to a fire.
Apparently a new cell should have an IR of around 5 milli ohms, one that';s not performing well will be above 20. I';ve got a couple that are in the 30';s and they';ve been resigned to low power jobs. The worst was over 250 per cell and frankly was terrible!
You';ll also see other cues of high IR - a pack that charges quickly to 4.2v per cell before trickle charging for ever is an indicator. It';ll do the opposite when you put any load on it and the voltage will plummet.
I should also add that a damaged pack should never really be trusted regardless of IR. For the sake of £15 for a replacement, sling it.

I charge mine outside now having had one go off while I was sat next to it. It had a flame nearly a couple of feet high shoot out of it. It';s the red hot foil wrap round the cells that still burns as it flutters down from the black smoke.

I';ve ordered a large bag now anyway a big one for charging and i need to sort something better for storage thanks for the advice ppl!!

Will defiantly be more cautious in the future with these things
