Should I report this even though I have no idea who the pilot was?

Should I report this even though I have no idea who the pilot was?

Here';s what happened.

I was spectating at the Great North run at the weekend, along the finish straight. Heard an out of place noise above my head and surprise surprise there was a phantom. Hovering over the crowd. Now if that wasn';t bad enough about 150m away was the helicopter landing spot with a heli circling around for landing.
Couldn';t see the phantom pilot anywhere, after short while watching it and trying to spot the pilot the phantom went into RTL and made a direct line for home straight across the heli area. :o
I managed to spot where it landed and the phantom pilot. But by the time I got there, ~300m away through a few hundred people he was gone.

So is there any point reporting it?

The pilot definitely deserves a  :slap:  for their blatant irresponsibility and stupidity, but I get the feeling that every reported quadcopter incident is further ammunition for the anti-drone campaigners to use against decent and law abiding multi-rotor pilots in the future.  If there';s a genuinely good chance the culprit could be traced I';d report him.  But if you are unaware of any cctv or physical security officers having been in operation within the area the pilot was flying from I';d probably let it go.  Unfortunately, reporting the numpty could well do more harm to our hobby than good.

I think Nate';s right. If you report it, you run the risk of fanning the flames of paranoia amongst the unlearned.

You could contact the organisers and see if they had knowledge of any aerial activity by a pilot who had attained certification and permission for the shoot (unlikely, but not impossible). Then double-check that they were happy with him banging across a helipad!  :blink

To report this you would require evidence. Pilots name, photo evidence. Anything that would help authorities to make an arrest.

I had the same happen to me recently and by the time I got to where the phantom landed behind some trees after flying over a horse race course. There was no one to be seen.

Then report him

There getting smarter (Dji owner) not posting as much on YouTube lol
My good wife spotted one over our house on Sunday afternoon, I was on the field behind my house flying but was in my own little world immersed in the fatshark';s lol.
I quickly packed up because I knew they would be flying it from the park that';s a one minute walk away from my front door,,,,,I was spot on  there he was, big back pack on , tx in one hand and now flying it over the train lines
Not my place to lecture anyone, so just struck up some friendly chat , telling him I';m into multis also. Had a good wiffle with him and I drooled over his very expensive toy, he quizzed me about fpv and stuff.
He landed, changed the pack , took off again , set it at aprox 300ft , flicked it into follow me, and then set off to walk home ! He only lives 5mins from me (i don';t know him), I watched it from my front garden until I couldn';t see it anymore, it made me chuckle
From the conversation we had I realized he knew little about multi rotors (neither do I,,,but I know enough) but seemed competent in operating his dji, although breaking every rule I know of.
I wouldn';t fly one over a crowd, I was shocked at the weight of it,  think he said the Lipo was a 4800 ?
It';s a crazy world
