looking for a good high spec hex build

Hi,

Its been a while since ive done anything with any of my quads but im hoping to build next a high quality 550 or larger hex used for aerial photography. Ive worked with crius aio and naze acro boards in the past but after trying a naza i can see that they are hard to beat. I dont want to come across as cheeky but does anyone have a decent build list for what im after? Or what they would use?

Most of my builds have been on the lower budget scale but obviously id like something fancy now, i will probably just use a go pro to start with since i have one already but a gimble would be necessary. As ive said ive built various quads in the past so putting them together is no problem, just narrowing down parts that are good nowadays.

thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Also if octo is superior then i can be persuaded , i dont need the extra lift but i suppose the redundancy would be nice.

The S550 gets very good reviews, get the frame and then buy some nice motors and esc`s, drop a naza on and you will have a pretty good hex, i plan on building one of these in the near future (unless i go on spending spree and do the tarot iron man hex)
Volantex Ranger 1600/2000, Ranger 1200 G2, Phoenix S 1600 AR900 Miniskyhunter, ZOHD Dart 635 and a few 680 batwings plus old faithful C1 chaser and a lot of eagletree guardians

Yeah thats the frame that i noticed a lot of people are using these days, i was looking at getting some really low rated motors 320kv, something nice and smooth possibly a pancake style motor.

I think 800kv is about as low as you want to go on a 550 hex, you will only have 10x4.7 props

Yeah your probably right, i was thinking long battery life but forgetting im going to lose rpm so would need bigger props. I will try a calculator and see what the lowest i can go is. your probably right on the money though.

Beat me to it!!!
If you want to go that low kv you need a bigger frame to swing at least 12" props probably bigger unless you are prepared to go 6S; 800 ish kv on 4S would be ok on 10" props and should work well but make sure that you check amps on ecalc to get the right pitch and esc Amps.

On a 550 hex frame i would go with 920 or 980 kv and 3s lipo..........my S500 has sunnysky X2212 980kv motors and i get about 16 minutes from a 4000mah  3s lipo 16 mins dont sound much but i have four lipo`s so get plenty of flying, this is with cmera and gimbal

Interested to know how you';re getting on with this, virginprops, as I';m in a similar situation and building my first hex.

I';ve plummed for the S550 frame from Unmanned Tech, as it seemed the best balance of price to performance (and by that I mean durability and likelyhood of survivng test flights!!!). There';s also a folding 680 frame, but it';s about twice the price.

https://www.unmannedtechshop.co.uk/s550-hexacopter-frame/

Checking out motors, something like an 880kv will lift over a kilo with a 10x4.5 and a 4s battery, but with 6 motors, you could get away with using 3s and lifting about 850g per motor.

As this is my first build I';m expecting things to go a bit wonky along the way, but it';s all good experience

Good luck with the build.

Good luck with your build, my S550 frame arrived today, it will be 2212 980kv sunnysky motors on 3s with naza

I looked at that one, too. It';s the frame that';s about twice the cost on Unmanned Tech. I think both frames are good, and the 680';s folding arms would make transportation much easier. Maybe for my second hex build  ;)

I ordered my hex frame earlier and it should be with me in a day or two... Can';t wait!   ::)

Looks like it will be a race to see who gets theirs built first, but i want a couple more flights out of my old S500 before i strip it for its parts needed to build the hex
