Hi all,
I see a guy on ebay is selling wooden hexcopter frames.

item no is 331746853997

THis isnt a question about the seller but about if a wooden frame is a good way to go in a first build.

Any opinions on wooden frames please?
Old, in it for the fun, know nothing type of gezzer.

No real problem with wooden frames apart from moisture but then again the electronics are not usually very good with moisture either. I seem to remember that wooden arms are better than aluminium for resonance.
I would guess looking at that one the strength might not be there. It has same weight as a DJI F550 (or clone) but not sure it would have same strength. Then again the F550 doesn';t fold.....

What sort of thing are you thinking of doing with the multi rotor?
I try :-)

Wooden frames are really good, vibration suppression is excellent but the example that you have seen is not the best way to go about it.
Have a look at Simplecopter      http://www.simplecopter.com     for a better method of construction, they stand for a lot of abuse without major damage!
I';ve made Tricopters, Vtails and Quadcopters using 12mm square poplar and birch faced ply, you can';t go wrong with them plus the added advantage of not needing to wait if you break an arm or plate.
My advice..... Go for it, woodies are the best fun!!!

Thanks for the reply, I am thinking of aerial photography with a quad on the larger side like this and learning to build, fly and crash as any other newbie :-)

The good thing about wooden frames is they can be built really cheaply.

My first tricopter was wooden, it allowed me to practice acro flying without worrying too much about busting the frame, even if I did, it was a trivial process to replace a busted arm or plates.

Why use 4 motors when you can use 6?

I have had a QAV250 type quad I built but it was too fast and twitchy for me. I have very little Remote Control experience.
I replaced it with a DJI F450 (Flamewheel) which has FPV (First Person View) camera and a GoPro type camera on a gimbal. It uses a Naza V2 (Lite flashed to V2) Flight Controller which has GPS and a On Screen Display (OSD, back to goggles to give batt voltage, location, height etc). It is nice and stable (I need to tweek gimbal but that';s part of the fun) and easy to fly. With the Naza and GPS I can take my hands off controls and it just sits there in the sky, it also has ';Panic'; mode. This is usually referred to as Return To Home :) So if I can';t work out which way its facing I can flick a switch and it should come back to take off position.

The F450 has many clones, is cheap and quite popular. It has a bigger brother the F550 which is a hex.
There are lots of UK suppliers, ebay, or if you don';t mind wait Hobby King(Uk and China warehouse) or Aliexpress, Banggood both in China.

Anyway the above gives you something to think about.

When you have an idea of what you want to buy post a list of components and I am sure people will comment.

If you dont have much experience flying or RC it might be worth getting a small quad for practice round the house, something like a eachines E010 (about £13 or £20 on amazon). Its very small and quite strong, so you can hack round the house and improve your eye hand co ordination.

Have Fun.
I try :-)

If your confident working with drill/jigsaw then build from scratch with wood, i am building a large T copter from scratch and loving it, plenty on youtube to help
