Controller Options

So having looked at some of these flight sims, and playing a few they often have the option to play with an xbox/playstation controller.
Finally my better half has shown at least a little interest in flying a bit of fpv, and as an absolute boss on the playstation she flys these better with that controller than my taranis.

I';m curious about whether it could be possible to fly a real quad with one of these controllers? Is there such an adapter out there, perhaps this could be a useful hack to get the console generation into racing

annikk.exe

It';s technically possible but ill-advised and complicated.

Friskle

it may be difficult, but i fail to see why its ill advised, considering many RTF micros use similar controllers, like Blade for example, you can fly a quad every bit as good with one of those types, the only factor is you have no settings, travel etc.  But from a control point of view, i wouldnt see a problem at all.

The sticks from controllers have been used with arduino';s quite a bit, I';m not sure how easy it is to embed the arduino in a controller, or to bring out the stick data only but other than that it seems the resolution is there and it has been done quite a bit.
I understand the reluctance because unless the system is very reliable there is the chance of damage and/or injury, it';s not a game, there are meatbags out there on this level that don';t respawn well.

Your wife is probably only better with the xbox controller because that';s what she';s used to. Get your taranis plugged into your PC and start playing the flight sims with that instead of a games controller.

Using a proper radio controller is technically better due to things like lower latency and higher resolution and the extras like dual rates, expo, etc. All the kinds of things that if she';s just going to fly one for 5 mins or so don';t really matter but if you think there';s a chance she might really get into it would really help in the long run. I';d risk it with a hubsan but not a ';proper'; 250 racing quad.

Otherwise you are creating a lot of extra work for yourself to produce an inferior controller just to make life a little easier on your wife to start with. If someone was training me up I';d by annoyed if they used an xbox games controller (or worse, mode 1 / spectrum) and made me do it wrong from the start like that.
One circlip short of a quadcopter.
1 lobe short of an antenna.

Thanks guys, was more interested if it was possible, will get her onto the taranis on the simulators, as has been said the extras with an actual tx make a huge difference in the end
