Last update: 21/08 - Work has delayed the completion of this at the moment as I';ve been working away.  But soon I';ll be back in the UK and get back on with finishing this thing off before it becomes obsolete.

Delay on remaining motors at the moment.  Cancelled the sunnysky I had decided to swap to due to potential hassle of fakes from China and waiting for UK supplier to get the original  EMAX motors in stock.

19/2 Frame pics added to bottom of thread

I';m sure there will be a few groans but just a post to record full order list and price paid for components for my Tarot 680pro that I';ll be building this year.  Might help some as some parts I spotted in others builds and then spent time trying to find where they bought them from.

Will try and update this first post with bits as they get ordered and eventually delivered for stuff from China and duty costs where applicable.

I was given a brand new Turnigy 9XR which I';ll be using until funds allow an upgrade to Taranis

Motors:  EMAX 3510 600kv
Agmhobby had a good price for motors but kept my money for 4 weeks constantly saying they were dispatched and would be providing tracking number shortly.  Now they say they were refused by customs and they need to cancel the order.  ??    Think they were never able to fulfill the price they were offering.

Motors:  Sunnysky 3508 580kv
Ordered 19th March
After being bollocked around by Agmhobby I';ve gone and ordered what I consider to be an upgraded motor from banggood as they seem to be very reliable on all the other stuff I';ve been ordering from them.
6 x Sunnysky 3508 580kv for £144 (incl BG discount code)

Means I have a spare EMAX 3510 CCW available if anyone wants to buy it at cost price.

Action Camera:  Yi Action Camera by Xiaomi
Order date: 13th March 2015
Been waiting for this to be released for quite sometime.  No idea on what gimbals etc will fit it but thought at £64 its worth a punt.  Ordered from Banggood on discount code.

PSU for charger:  Dell Poweredge 2850 500w used PSU
Order date: 16th March 2015
So in preparation for ordering a charger once they come back into stock at HK I ordered a 500W PSU that I intend to modify to feed the Lipo charger.  good price at £12.99 delivered

Power:  Turnigy 5000mah 4s (20c) batteries and Turnigy Reaktor 300w 20A charger
Order date: 16th March 2015
Found the charger in stock at Hobbyking Europe so ordered it for about £44 + 2 x batteries for £25 each

Thanks Jimmer that';ll be annoying  especially as Hobbyking say its for 680pro.

What motors are you going to use?

Trying to decide between EMAX 600, Sunnysky 580 / 340.  EMAX arent on rc calc though so I';m guessing the figures a bit for those to determine optimum configuration.

Altus

Annoying to be charged £3.23 customs and £8 handling charge on only £21 of goods.  However I suspected that was a likely result of buying from Hobbyking.  I should have split it into separate orders and ordered things from elsewhere.

Hi Jimmer,

I started setting up the frame to check and I think its possible to get this to fit to pro frame.  I';ve just ordered some male/female 18mm spacers as I think it will be possible to mount into the folding arm clamp holes as they seem to align ok just need to replace the existing 5-6mm m2.5 with the spacer.  Will let you know how this goes once the spacers arrive from ebay.

Altus

Frame build is coming on slowly but surely.  Soldered the ESCs onto the PDB and started working out where I';m going to mount them onto the bottom plate.  I';ve ordered more 17mm standoffs as used the first 8 I ordered to move the battery and gimbal rail down a bit so that the ESCs can be mounted to the bottom plate easier.  Will upload some photos once the ESCs are in their final mounting position.

Altus

I';ve gone with mounting the ESCs to the bottom plate with outdoor mounting tape

Also after soldering all the cables to the PDB I then decided I want the ability to swap bits out easier so now desoldered everything and putting it together with bullet connectors and a spider harness instead to make it easier to replace pieces when I inevitebly break something.

Thanks Beaver.  Been waiting for deliveries at the moment due to Chinese New Year delaying items being despatched.

Today I spent an hour or two fighting the 9XR transmitter trying to get OpenTX firmware installed.  Looks like I hit most of the issues others have also had about new chipset in the unit causing communication issues.  Finally had to disable the backup and compatibility checks to get it to run the firmware in and bit worried by the invalid EEPROM error initially.  But looks like its all installed and loader screen is now showing OpenTX correctly.

I';ve got a dirty little confession to make..  I';ve also been eyeing up an RC glider really fancy a Pheonix 2000 from Hobby King.

Hi,

Can I ask what lift capacity each motor has ? Build a Tarrot 680, I am using the DJI motors as a test bed but the flight times are limited to 3 mins and then get a low level 3.75 per cell

Listed max thrust on MT3510 600KV motors with 4S batteries (14.8V) with 14x4.7 props is 1780g.    Of course wouldnt fly for long at that draw but ecalc seems to be suggesting 10mins or so on a single 5000mah 4s but prepping it to be able to run off 2x 5000mah 4S in parallel to get 17-20min flight times

Annoying update on the motors.  AGMHOBBY have now said the motors were refused by customs and they want to now cancel my order.   Annoying that they kept telling me they have been on the way for 4 weeks even though their website offered postage from London???  So suspect they are an unreliable supplier.

';No 5 is alive';  So pixhawk and gubbins all hooked up and testing fine off the frame but currenly its only an uno copter as I';ve only got one motor.

Last night was spent soldering up the dell server power supply which seems to now power on ok and give a solid 12v output.  Just need the bullet connectors and 10AWG wire to get output to Turnigy Reaktor charger.

Turnigy batteries have had XT60 connectors soldered.  Hope my soldered connections are robust as wire was bigger than the hole it had to go into.  Not sure if you can buy XT60 connectors for larger wire guage?

XT60 are rated for 60A continuous current.  Hobbyking also makes XT90 and XT90-S Anti Spark connectors which are rated for 90A continuous current.

Did you check how many amps your motors will draw with your choice of props?  It';s worth noting that you need to consider the hover current and full throttle current.  While you probably won';t fly full throttle for extended periods you want to make sure that your wiring can support it.

Lets say your motors and props draw 30A each, that';s 180A from the battery where the connector sits.  It would probably not last very long.

Just had a quick look at the SunnySky motors and 1447 props as you mentioned both in your posts.

SunnySky says 18.7A on full throttle, that';s just shy of 113A.  I haven';t built a hex yet (the 680Pro is my favourite candiate) but I would go for XT90 for the battery connectors, possibly even something bigger.

The thing about the XT-style connectors is that HK doesn';t say what the peak current is and the duration they can support it for.  The answer is your are probably fine, but for the sake of a £2 connector I wouldn';t risk it.

Thanks Quadfather.  More soldering then :)

ecalc with all up weight of up to 4KG gives 75A max draw (42A hover) so XT90s should be fine.  Although I think I should be well under this weight as I';m only adding Yi Action Camera and a gimbal once I decide which  (25A hover at just under 3kg).

Here';s the comparison on A ratings.  Ordered a few XT90s now to replace battery connections up to spur to esc';s

If you plan wiring two batteries in parallel, then as long as you solder the main battery cables to create a Y cable, or just solder 2 sets of battery cables to your pixhawk power module, xt60 connectors should be fine, as you';ll be spreading the load between two xt60 connector pairs.

I';m looking at a very similar build. Your thread has been very interesting. I currently fly a F550 with extended arms and 11" props on 2 x 3s LiPo batteries, running almost identical flight control as you, but flight time is limited in my case to about 10mins. Less with gimbal and VTx connected. Looking for longer flight time and more lift,  so think the 680pro could be the way to go. Will allow larger props so a move to 4s LiPos in order to spin more powerful motors. I was considering 700kv motors though with 13" props. How much clearance do you get with 14" props? I';m surprised they fit at all as to my calculation you have 340mm between adjacent prop centres, which is 13.38" so 14" props will clash.

See you have a LiPo alarm on your list also. I presume you have the Pixhawk power module here? The pixhawk uses this to monitor cell voltage and current which are required to setup failsafe, and using the Teensy, you will get the battery voltage fed down to your Taranis, so no need for the LiPo alarm. If you do want to monitor individual cell voltages though, given you have Frsky X8R smartport, I would suggest you go with the Frsky LiPo sensor (FLVSS) instead. They are really cheap and allow individual cell voltages to be fed down to your taranis. With 2 batteries, you can even run 2 sensors (as long as you change the ID of one of them, so they don';t clash). I use exactly this system with the Teensy telemetry also (using the Wolkstein code) and modified that code a little to allow the use of the Frsky battery monitors. These integrate nicely with the Teensy telemetry - so you have all the battery alarms you need without the need for a LiPo alarm.
