Your Hex: How much can it carry and for how long does it fly?

Can';t make up my mind. I';ve built several quads but have been planning for a new build. Was thinking I would go X8 but I';m considering buying the Tarot690 Hex.

So to help me decide if it will satisfy my wants, how long does your hex fly and how much can it carry?

Right now my setup would be built from 740kv MT4006 Tigers and 25A Tiger ESC (I have 8 of each) with a NAZA V2. Thinking I';ll try 14" props (should be okay with low pitch) and I';d like to be able to carry both of my 5000mAh 4S batteries in series. Does that sound plausible with a hex?

Jumpy07

Flat hex';s are the sweet spot for me..  re: weight v safety and flight time..

X8 .. good in wind.. and great payload capability.. but def more expensive to get same flight time..

My hex';s are all @ 7kg.. and flight times @ 8-12mins 11,600mah 6s with 400kv motors and 40a esc';s

KV of your motors look a  bit high for good flight time.... 4s is series is 8s.. not many motor or ESC';s support 8s..  better running two in par

As Jumpy says, those motors are for a 4s setup. You could run your batteries in parallel using 14x4.8 CF props no probs though.. http://www.rctigermotor.com/html/2013/Professional_0914/54.html

Of course you';d be better off with 6s and lower kV motors, but as you have what you have already you may as well use them.

Balders

I imagine you meant parallel when you said series :)

I run 2 x 5000mah 4S in parallel on my hex.

Multistar 690kv motors, 13" carbon foxtech props 40amp opto esc';s, wkm.

At max weight (ie carrying a 5D) I make sure I';m on the ground by 7mins just to be safe.  On light weights (ie gopro gimbal) I can get 20mins.

Ooops, yeah, definitely parallel.

Sounds perfect to me! Haven';t moved past the basic GoPro FPV setup but I';d like the potential for more.

So I imagine the difference is just stability, right? I fly in wind a little bit but a bit of wobble isn';t so bad if it can still handle it.

Balders

I';d say certainly design/build with the ability to lift something fairly hefty in weight, even if you are only able to stay airborne for 7 mins at a time.

You';ll no doubt end up with numerous battery sets anyway :-)

having built over 25 tarot hex';s now i have settled on a very simple formula for the 680 & 690. i use the turnigy 4s hard packs that are well cheap from hobby king. The 2x 5000mah packs give about 16mins safe flying with a gopro setup and about 12mins with a nex5 strapped to it !!! as far as props go i have never used anything larger than 12" on the 680 as its such a light setup big props will just cause more probs with flight dynamics rather than gained flight time (quality rather than quantity) overall the 680/690 is a very good piece of kit that flies very well and will standup in moderate wind conditions, make sure you buy the cheepo retracts off tarot makes a big difference !!!
