My new 550 clone

If DJI ever read this let me just tell them that some good has come of the Naza M Lite hack featured elsewhere on this forum ::)  I have had my interest in Naza re-kindled and recently took delivery of a Naza M V2 with GPS and a BT unit - albeit second user, but its got me back in the game.

Why? Basically I had all of the bits for a 550 hex from around this time last year which had sat in my box o';bits.  The Naza M Lite was going to go in it, but after the fly away (I got it back) all confidence had gone in using that.

Anyroadup, I';ve built it now, and  a quick and very short maiden has demonstrated it working okay, albeit with a bit of a twitch as it tries to hold altitude stable. The gains will need tweaking no doubt, as it is currently on out of the box settings of 125%.

Flight time with a 2200mAh 3S is just a shade under three minutes! This going to need a bit of work to optimise. I';m going to need much more than that ::)

A heavy beast compared to what I am used to. I ran it across the scales with various batteries as follows:
(all weights in kg)

1.466 - no battery
1.658 - 3S 2200mAh NanoTech
1.690 - 3S 2700mAh Zippy Compact
1.917 - 2 x 3S 2700mAh Zippy Company (total capacity 5400mAh)
1.995 - 4S 5000mAh NanoTech
2.578 - 2 x 4S 5000mAh NanoTech

Build List
Frame - HJ 550 clone
ESC - RCTimer 45A Opto
Motors - N2830/11-KV1000 Outrunner Brushless Motor (3S-4S)
Propellers - Gemfan 8x4.5 carbon reinforced ABS
Receiver - FrSky Delta-8 in CPPM mode
FC - Naza M V2 with GPS, Bluetooth module

Here is the eCalc link, hit Calculate to regenerate the motor graph:

Piccy - well, it is just a bog standard 550 build, nothing clever or sexy in it. But here it is anyway.

Welcome to the Hex club Danny boy!  We like plenty of ';hex'; here!   :azn

P.S I use a Zippy compact 5000 4 cell and get a good 15 minutes, and that';s with a gopro attached.

Why use 4 motors when you can use 6?

15 minutes! :o

I strapped a pair of Zippy Compact 2700 (5400mAh) together, didn';t get anything like 15 mins, felt more like 10. I should probably try with 1045 props once I get the hex gains sorted (currently 125% default).  Then tweak them for the 10in props and see what comes of that.

In time I may swap out the motors for DJI-class motors (same KV) and see how that goes.

Well, i';m using emax 2216';s and t-motor carbons (10") but didn';t really get much less using eprops, it';s just quieter and less vibey.

I reckon those EMP motors of mine are a bit power hungry. Will have to do some timings, but if all else fails then its a set of those DJI 980KV motors or EMax 2216 that I already have in a few of my builds and have found totally reliable (and silent as you say). ~~

Hoping to get some air time on Sunday to sort out the gains. Then if its still messing about I';ll switch the RX over to PWM.
