Motor and ESC wires issue

Hello all

My motors have three black wires and my ESC';s have three blue wires which does not help with working out which wires go where but when I built my 450';s the motors had three separate colours and so did the ESC';s. ?

It does not matter, if the motor is going in the wrong direction you just change any two wires over.

use a chocolate box?

Great idea for testing motor direction.
But definately not to be left on permanently. Can';t stress enough how much these cables need to be soldered together or at worst bullet connected and the joint heat shrunk.

Black Magic or Milk Tray but then you could also use Thorntons or possibly some Terrys Gold

Erm think it was Choc block that was referred to,  I always use it for testing - saves soldering more than once!

Is that the same thing as a terminal block?  Haven';t thought of using them for motor testing! ~~

Sure is, wouldn';t be without it - don';t run motors any longer than necessary though terminals may get warm ::)

i just twist wires together if i';ve got enough slack in them, if not its just a quick tack together

Very generally, the motor wires exit the motor flattened out, so there is a left, middle and right wire.  This isn';t at all scientific but an observation I';ve made when building these with the same coloured wires.  So I keep middle for middle. Then work out the left and right wires for appropriate motor rotation.

As others have said on here, a piece of "chocolate block" as used for mains wiring is very helpful as you can quickly swap the wires around for orientation purposes before getting around to soldering them in place.

What do people do to strip the coatings from the motor wires?  The advice I found was from sanding down every individual strand to burning it off to using carcinogenic substances!  :o

I tried the burning-off method but that didn';t work too well as it melted the insulation before the coating.  Any ideas?

have you tried scraping it off with a stanley knife

I have indeed.  I couldn';t get it clean enough for the solder to stick.

I presume you mean the enamelled copper winding wire?  I used some recently to make up a low pass filter, the first time I used the stuff seriously.  Following advice I read somewhere I used dry Wet or Dry paper to scrape off the enamelling.  It took a bit of rubbing but got there soon enough.
