LiPo Storage

Can anyone tell me the dangers of storing my LiPo';s fully charged? Takes ages to take them from storage charge to fully charged if the weather allows me to get flying. I';ve seen it change from a perfect day to a hurricane/monsoon while charging the batteries and then having to go through the whole process in reverse!

Keep them somewhere cool (ish) away from flammable things and away drop anywhere that they will get damaged.

I keep mine in an old ammo box (vented just in case anything goes wrong)

As long as they have been made in the last couple of years and aren';t puffed or anything there';s no issues about keeping them charged for a while ( certainly a couple of weeks should cause no issues whatsoever)
Not much kit, but what I have I like

I keep mine in all manner of charge states and have never had an issue.

The only time I have and do take them back to storage voltage is if I know I wont be flying for a month or longer.

If you can keep them at a stable temperature then they should be ok for a few weeks, as an extreme I';ve had a couple of my 3S 2200';s left charged for a couple of months without any adverse problems. The main thing to avoid is rapid changes in temperature this can result in conflagration, I have in the past stored mine in an old fridge in the garage but just leave them in the garage on the floor now so that they stay cool. If you do this make sure that when you come to charge them they are given time to get to the temperature you are charging them in otherwise you could overcharge them!

If you leave them fully charged for long periods.. some can puff..   depends on quality of lipo.. always better to storage charge..

I like my lipo';s kept charged and ready to go!  If it';s safety you';re worried about (and it is well you should) always store them in a garge or outbuilding, on fireproof trays or boxes.
I have a good range of lipo';s now, and some have been dormant for over a year, no issue yet.  But I';ll let you know if there is!   ~~

Also, they are all there in front of me when I load the old motor up, I used to keep them upstairs, and lost count of the times I forgot to take the damn things!   :banghead:

I keep them charged in old metal ammo boxes, usually available from fishing tackle shops.

To many manufacturers have different opinions on lipos, in truth, probably don';t even know what will effect what.

In over 6 years, virtually every lipo I have had, have been stored full or virtually full, and never had one puff because of it, I have had some puff, but was that through storage or simply getting tired through use, who knows, bought some once, when they arrived two were puffed, voltage was at storage voltage.

For the most part storage voltage effectively means that if something did happen, the battery wouldn';t be as violent as a fully charged one.
And even then, in most cases even a punctured battery won';t go up, the puncture usually has to have entered the compound to short it, which in turn starts the reaction.

If it is actually true that storing them fully charged makes them puff, then all my batts should have been dead long since, point is no on really knows.

i';ve been very mean to some of mine, but they don';t seem to mind. i now have some ammo tins to keep them in. they have 6 off 3mm holes in the lids, so that in the event of a fire they vent the presure.
