I have just taken the shrink wrap of this esc and de-soldered the leads as I';m attaching my motor leads direct. However I noticed one of the solder joints is bridging the legs of one of those transistors or whatever it is.

Is this ok out will it short out and go up in smoke. Anyone know?

That doesn';t look right to me :hmm:

I would be inclined to clean that off before applying power.

Coincidentally ...

I am re-wiring my EMax 12A SimonK ESC and have found exactly the same thing. Random solder splashes shorting out the ICs adjacent to where the motor wires are soldered to the ESC';s board.  I';ve used a solder sucker to clean all bridging splashes, there were a few.   But the odd thing is that I have been flying with these ESC several times with no trouble.  The solder bridges should not be there but seems to not have impacted how the ESC operate.

I';ve found this on two of the four ESC that I have opened up already and fully expect to find the same in the other two.

And yes, if you are finding these solder splash joints then do remove them carefully so as not to damage the IC itself or destroy its own solder joint to the ESC board.

Really, I do expect quite a bit better from a firm like EMax.

Okay, following up on the above.  I cleaned up the board and soldered in my own wires.  Mine had been through several flights in this state - probably about 20 minutes today alone. So I don';t think it actually does any harm - but looks dreadful.

Here';s my before and after pics ...

That';s shocking.. You think you would be getting a quality product fir your money but it just goes to show how much care goes into manufacture...

You can understand to a point, when the person that soldered this product together is probably getting pennies to do it.
What does he or she care if you multi falls from the sky, you will just buy another one!
Carbon Tricopter with KK2 mini because you have to own a Tri and Falcon Evo FPV (rebuild again) with fatshark 600mw vtx & pz2040 cam. New addition (hidden from the missus!) 250 quad.

I would assume that they are running to a common rail so electrically it';s not an issue.

But it doesn';t say anything good about their quality control team (idle they have one)
Not much kit, but what I have I like

As has been said, they run a common rail so wont affect flight, however if people are happy for me to use their images I will feed this back to my contact at emax.

Many Thanks

Phil , please use the images howsoever you wish mate.  If you can';t download them let me know and I';ll put them in a public area.

I think it is a bit of a shock to the system to see such soldering quality when we strive our utmost to make absolutely sure that such doesn';t happen when we do it.

I think, in the way these fet';s are being used for power switching it is ok.

However it all adds weight! it is a large part lead.

Only when one looses sight of your toy does FPV become fun and against legislation already in place.
