Advice on which motors to buy

Building a quad using a Q650 frame (X650 clone). I';ve done the calcs for thrust etc and think that the JDrones 880Kv motors from BYOD will be enough for my needs.

Any views on these or perhaps better options?  I ';think'; I';ve settled on 30A ESCs but not yet clear on which batteries and whether I need to be running 10 or 12" props.

Any advice appreciated.

Have you got a link to the motors your looking at, I would always recmmend motors with bolt on prop adapters they are far better than the collet or clamp on types

Well you';ve helped me understand yet another detail. I';d seen discussion of collets and bolt on prop adapters without understanding the difference. So I looked it up and now I can see the benefits of bolt-on.

I was considering these from BYOD but they use the collet style mount.

So how about these from UnmannedTech?

I would deff avoid the collet version the motors look good from unmanned tech but you could get cheaper if you didn';t mind waiting for chinese post   

I';m surprised some of the other members haven';t made a few suggestions

Buyers of motors tend to fall into two camps.  They either buy cheap from China (£8-£12 ish)etc and accept that they are going to need some work to balance them and in some cases have to buy more than they want in order to get a usable set or they spend £28+ to get quality motors that are unlikely to require balancing.  My set of Tiger Motor 2216';s that I received last week were all as near perfectly balanced as you could hope to get and that was straight out of the box.
The two motors that you have highlighted both fall in the middle in terms of price. Unless you can find someone that has these then they are an unknown quantity.  They could be cheap, gash motors at an inflated price or equally they could be the bargain of the century.

The Tiger Motors that I mentioned are also available as the 900kv from TeamBlackSheep or Torxmotor from Quadcopters.

I would suggest having a bit of a rethink and either going cheaper from HobbyKing or RCTimer or paying the bit extra and going up to the TBS/Tiger/Torxmotor.  There is no need to go as far as the AXi!

Thank you. As, ultimately, I want to carry a GoPro on a gimbal, a balanced motor will go a long way to helping here and I';d rather pay the extra at the outset for known good quality parts.

So I';ve bookmarked the 2216';s from Quadcopters.co.uk and will just have to save a little longer :)

Flippin eck, ordered the ESCs from HobbyKing and decided I';d order the motors from Quadcopters as well. They were in stock when I checked this morning, now out of stock. 

Oh well, I guess I have a few weeks until the ESCs get here so will just have to wait, and hope MrsG doesn';t find a use for my hard saved cash in the meantime

Hi Darren.

One thing to consider is how likely you are to have the odd misshap such as prop strikes etc.

When i started out in Feb this year after similar deliberation i went for the Team Black Sheep 750kv motors which are basicaly RCTimer motors

This turned out to be a good move as I ended up knocking them about quite a bit while learning and i';m glad i did not have more expensive motors on the quad.

Now i';m on top of the flying i';ve upgraded to Tiger Motors and moved away from plastic props to get a smoother running quad for filming from.

on 10x4.5 slow fly props they give me good flight performance and duration with my 635 quad at a take off weight of up to 2kg on 4S lipos.
