Need help mounting video antenna

having trouble mounting my video antenna
i have a QAV-R frame, tbs unify > ufl to sma > tbs triump
the ufl connector pops off the board or the cable tie holding the sma part to the frame breaks off, luckily the antenna landed close to the quad as i disarmed as soon as i lost video

how is everyone else mounting their antennas?
anyway to secure the ufl connector? hot glue gun etc?

Cheredanine

You can use hot glue to secure the ufl, also add extra heat shrink.
But I would suggest securing the opposite end of the ufl pigtail to the frame with cable ties, this then creates a fault point just past the SMA connection where the actual antenna flex pulls out of its SMA, the next step is to have the cable ties beyond the sma, timing the base of the antenna to frame

On my Matek VTX I've used hot glue to secure the UFL connector, then looped it back along the VTX board and heat-shrinked over the top. This provides good security, occupies some excess UFL, and reduces the stress on the glued joint. Many crashes and no problems so far ...

Hot glue over ufl. Connect antenna to sma and heat shrink over the joint. Then 2 cable ties over sma, 1 over pigtail end of sma, the other over antenna end of sma. I don't use a vertical hole in the frame to put the sma through. I have it coming horizontally out the back and put a bend in the antenna coax.
I try :-)

thanks for the help guys
need to get hold of a hot glue gun now

Elmattbo

I’ve been having a similar issue with my unify pro recently. The blob of glue they put on lasted a while but now any little movement in a crash and it pops off. Annoying! I was thinking about hot glue but at the temperature a unify pro runs at, I thought it may go soft. Will give it a try anyway if other have had success with it.

I’ve also seen the double heat shrink technique (heat shrink the cable to the unify pro) but the cable is a little short to get to the antenna mounting position if I do that.

seen amazon do a 5pack of ufl to sma pigtails that are 15cm, should be enough to loop back on itself, plus some spares in case they break or for future builds
even has a nut if you wish to bolt the sma end to the hole in the frame

I would say don't use the through frame with a nu to secure method. My reason is I crash so often that the antenna would transfer all the impact force to the frame. Maybe braking the frame!
I try :-)

Two-Six

This is what I done.

The orange bit is made from Fimo, the ant goes into it and bolts on then this is bolted on with a nylon bolt and nuts to a crimp on terminal for auto wiring then there are two carbon fiber rods held into the terminals with epoxy and they bolt onto the frame.  Its really strong, the antenna will not pull out as the little legs won't let it move far enough.  On impact the antenna swings out the way and all the crash energy is absorbed by the mount.

I think its a good way to go anway, loads of crashes later VTX cables and the mount are all in great shape still.

Apologies for the 90 degree tilt to the right, dunno why that happened.
