Places To Fly

LuMan

It seems that we all have favourite places to fly. Some of them belong to RC flying clubs, and some are public or open land.

So, here';s a thread where we can list these various places, along with additional information, so we can build up a sort of directory of suitable places.

I';ve put together a simple template, which I hope will make it easier to add your info, as well as make it easy for folk to check if it';s local, suitable, etc..

TEMPLATE
Nearest Town or City: [Mytown, Midlands, North East, etc..]
Site Name: [e.g. My Farm, Tramps'; Field, Fly Meadow..]
Location: [Grid ref, GPS, Lat-Long]
Type: [Field, farm, beach, copse, cliff, etc..]
Info: [How to get there. What to expect. What it';s like to fly in. Anything else]
Owner: [If relevant]
Considerations: [Such as, folk fly there, but there';s no official agreement. Or, look out for dog-walkers. That sort of thing]
Media: [Pictures / Maps / Video...]

Feel free to improve or expand the template as fit.

Well, I';ll start the ball rolling with my nearest flying site....

Nearest Town: Beeston, Nottingham.
Site Name: Wier Field
Location: 52.912833, -1.197586
Type: Sports field
Info: Head for the Station in Beeston Rylands and continue all the way down Station Road. At the end of the road, where the canal is, the road bends sharply to the right. Go straight on, over the little hump-back bridge and along the access road to the car park, which is right next to the field!
There are a few football pitches and some power lines over the car park. However, there is plenty of space for flying and some good low-level protection from the tall trees to the East of the field.
Fixed wings with decent wheels will be able to do rolling take-offs without issue.
If you check it on Google Maps, then I fly from the car park, where the footy pitches are.
Owner: Maintained by Broxtowe Borough Council
Considerations: A few folk fly there, but there';s no official agreement, so please be respectful. Look out for dog-walkers - although they are generally really good and show an interest in anything they see flying there. Buzzing canal boats is considered bad form, as those moored my well be residential.
Media: Check the Google Maps image for 52.912833, -1.197586

Here';s a couple of pics of the Weir Field. I was going to add them to the other post, but I can';t, as the Edit function won';t let you. Still I took them, so I';m posting them!

Great idea lumen and most most generous of you. Finding locations is always a nightmare and occasionally a closely guarded secret. I';ll do some digging and show you some locations I';ve flown in Kent that are pretty good.

Nearest Town or City: Newport (South Wales)
Site Name: Penhow Quarry
Location: A48 - Caldicot - NP26 3AS (Approx) - 51.614904, -2.833602
Type: Pretty vast open quarry
Info: Large expanse of open land. On arrival there is a huge metal gate which is open with a well defined path. There is a lay-by outside for parking.
Owner: Hanson (I think) although the site has not had any activity for > 10 years.
Considerations: There is no official agreement. I have been walking my dogs there for years. There are occasional dogs walkers but 99% of the time i';m there on my own.

If in doubt, flat out!

LuMan,
Great idea, kudos, but this isn';t gonna work as a thread, it is either gonna become unmanageable or ineffective.

Suggest you talk to admins about using the member map in some way for this

Now that IS a good idea. I never even thought of it. Perhaps a different colour pin (say, blue) for flying sites.....

I';ll look into it.

Might be worth adding your spots on here.

The counter intuitive bit round here is rural areas with a lot of farmland don';t have parks or much common ground. If I have a site it';s because I';m doing it without express permission or where I do have verbal permission I would hesitate to invite more than one or two others. I did ask one guy if I could use his field very close to where I live but he wasn';t up for it, pity really as I can keep an eye on his field and property better then he can, in fact just tried to get a message to him that cows had got through his fence and were consuming his grass (what he uses the field for).

I';d love it to be a better known pursuit where the landowner knows he could give permission and benefit in some way.
I';ve said it before the other farmers fields I fly in I';ve pulled a wheely bin full of rubbish from the hedgerows and two chairs from a small pond, sort of exchange for the access.

Nearest Town or City: Wickford

Site Name: Memorial Park

Location: 51°37';05.3"N 0°32';15.8"E
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.6181047,0.5378609,162m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en

Type: Public park

Info: Lot';s of entrances but Highcliffe Road gets you to the best part. Quite a lot of free parking.

Considerations: It';s a public park so you do have to share with the kids and dog walkers. However, it';s big with several areas so it can be done. The Highcliffe Road end has several football pitches (with goalposts and lots of trees with nice gaps). I haven';t flown here much yet so it remains to be seen if anyone will have a problem with it.
