I really wanted it to work but..........

I given up with the Crius for now. Went out last night for a test and it was uncontrollable again, it just wouldn';t behave itself and after a half a dozen crashes it broke and arm. So now I';ve ripped all the Crius stuff out and put the Naza back in. I really wanted the Crius to work because of the extra features over the Naza and as much as I like tinkering about with stuff I really want to fly it more. I';ll get a Naza GPS upgrade and hopefully that';ll be even better and I';ll start a second build with the Crius as a project later. At least that way I';ve always got one that flies.

Are your ESCs flashed with SimonK firmware? It';s quite tricky to get a crius tuned well if they are not.

The NAZA is much more forgiving of marginal setups with poorly balanced props and slower updating ESCs etc - i suspect it';s much smarter and has more sophisticated programming that does stuff in software on the flight controller you have to do yourself with the rest of the setup if you go with the crius.

Are you running Multiwii or Megapirate? I have no experience of megapirate but with multiwii the difference between simonK and standard ESCs is night and day.

Ah you know you';re right. In my frustration I forgot I could have tried flashing it with Multiwii instead of megapirate, that might have done the trick and saved me a lot of work. The Naza isn';t fully set up yet so I may bung the Crius back in for another go with Multiwii. My esc';s are the standard DJI 30amp ones that came with the 450 and as I';m new to all this I haven';t strayed into the dark art of flashing esc';s. Is it easy enough to do?

Multiwii is easier to tune than megapirate - it just has less GPS functionality. If you care more about stunt flying than GPS waypoints it';s clearly the better choice - otherwise megapirate is a more sophisticated bit of software - just trickier to setup properly.

Flashing ESCs isn';t rocket science it';s just a little fiddly, especially at first. Fortunately i wrote a handy step by step guide to help;

If you get stuck feel free to ask questions. I may have to add to the guide accordingly - which will be useful for others.

The DJI ESCs are good quality and reliable but some nice flashed simonk escs will out perform them because of the improved firmware and faster update speeds. You could keep the dji ESCs for another project or possibly ebay them - their second hand value might cover the cost of the replacements as ';dji'; branded stuff will sell for more.

I had 5 days of frustration using MeggaP on the Cirus AIOP, it kept flipping on take off and nothing would calm it down.

Switched to MultiWii 2.1 (this forums down load) and instantly it flew.

Mine was flipping as well although it calmed down after I changed the PID settings amongst other things.

Flipping would normally indicate that the motors are in the wrong order have you double checked your connections we have seen a lot of people make mistakes when connecting the motors up its very easily done  ~~

Yep, checked and double checked all the connections, motors spinning the right ways and the correct props in place. I think my issue was a software setting but it stopped flipping when I fixed the oscillating. I used to take off and start to wobble each corner in turn and got worse until it did a back flip. Very impressive but not what I asked it to do.

Gaza07

It sounds like you needed the Rate P reducing hopefully when your ready to try it again there will be a new copy of the firmware like 2.9.1 or 2.9.2 which should be a lot easier to tune  ~~
