Level mode is horrible in Betaflight

Starting a new thread on this instead of just tagging the question on at the end of my PID thread.

I';ve got acro mode tuned reasonably well in BF3.0.0 but level and horizon modes are horribly wobbly and erratic. What can I do? The only setting seems to be "Strength" but I can';t find any documentation on it anywhere.

I';m getting better at acro but I still want to fall back to horizon and my son does not do acro at all.

Lol unfortunately betaflight is an experimental fork of cleanflight for racing and freestyle.  It develops stuff which gets fed into cf, as such features appear and disappear and you may get a release that makes your quad explode

As such there tends to be almost no attention paid to stabilised modes (that isn';t what it is for)

All that is a caveat.

firstly if you are using betaflight it is very important to have the later BF configurator, do not use cf configurator or old releases.

Next at the top of the pid tuning page there is a button called something like show hidden or show all or show unused, click it

Now not sure if they bothered but you may hpget access to pids for self level. Be very wary of the d term, this was used for something else on the basis that self level wasn';t what BF is for

You can also try adjusting the strength, increasing it should make the quad hold level firmer

Edit: just thought, watch the rates, BF stock rates will be different from cf, also from memory BF does not have any expo on stock install, dunno if current cf does, finally if you are adjusting rates or adding expo with BF make sure you know what you are doing, current BF releases are playing with a dual rate system which generates expo/superexpo

Hmm, sounds like I might be better off going back to Cleanflight with luxfloat. I presume I can take my working PIDs with me. Having said that, I think level mode was pretty horrible in CF as well.

So I only fly BF, it is great fun, but for my son I put cf on his quad because he is still learning and flies angle.

If you are flying acro then using BF isn';t really a problem, you just have to be careful about what you mess with (the BF rcgroups thread is currently at about 2500 pages, catching up is not easy but the wiki helps)

If your son is flying in stabilised mode he would probably better with cf, it changes slower, is much better tested and frankly he is not gonna get anything from BF he won';t get in BF.

But if cf stabilised is iffy you have the following options:
1. Maybe something on the quad is causing issues (physical damage, bad solder, unbalanced etc)
2. Increase the strength of stabalization
Or most likely: add some rc expo

Cleanflight it is then. I still like to try my rolls in horizon mode as crashing the Eachine tends to be very expensive.

I thought I might have to reduce the strength setting. I';ll try playing around with it in small jumps.

Maybe it';s time to port the parts over to a different frame ;)

Most of them are not that much use. I';ve started gathering some better specced/more standard bits for a new build and I will probably sell the Racer while it still works.

Hmmmm...I have flown a number of the betaflight builds in angle and have never had wobbly or erratic flights. In fact I have always found it WAY more stable than anything in terms of cleanflight. I have upgraded all my FC';s to 3.0.0, but have not had time to test them yet. If I get a chance I will report back here...

Dropping the strength to 25 (from the default 50) seems to have helped but if you go too low, it gives up levelling. On the plus side, rolls seem to almost perform themselves in horizon mode although it does tend to come out of them yawed to 90 degrees for some reason.
