Taranis & D4R2

Sorry if the question has been asked before guys but i am getting very confused with the Taranis plus euro firmware, after being out of modelling for over 15yrs all this new stuff is taking its time to learn.
I am building a Lumenier Qav 250 and have got
Taranis X9d plus (euro firmware)
D4R2 (from usa)
Naze 32 with osdoge
From what i have read up on,am i right in that the Taranis will not bind to the D4R2 unless i update the firmware on it ?
And when i do it will not provide telemetry from the naze 32 ?

You';re in luck if the D4R-II is from the USA, that makes it relatively easy to just change your Taranis to non-EU firmware and forget the crappy EU directorates altogether.
Non-EU is the way to go. :>

Basically here is the deal:

You have NON-EUROPE firmware on the D4R-II.
You have some Europe firmware on the INTERNAL XJT MODULE inside your Taranis, this is what needs to be updated
You also have the radio firmware, OpenTX, which you can either upgrade or not upgrade - it';s up to you.

Please check which version of OpenTX you are running on the radio.  If it';s version 2.0 or later, you don';t even need a programming dongle to flash the XJT module, you can do it with the radio itself. :>

XJT firmware here:

That sounds like a good start !
I am picking it up slowly as i have been building it following online blogs, and now i know what that empty compartment is on the back of the Taranis
I take it i need 1 of those as well ?

annikk.exe

Nono... there IS an external XJT module as well, which can be used in other types of radios, but the Taranis actually has one built in.
The picture on the website looks like the external module, but the internal and external modules both use the same firmware.

So to clarify; you do not need an external module.  You need to flash the internal XJT module that is already built into the Taranis. :>

It';s quite complicated because the Taranis has its own firmware (OpenTX) and it also has the internal XJT module which has firmware...  So there are 2 different types of firmware in the same radio.  That';s just a consequence of open-sourcing the radio software (OpenTX), but having a proprietary radio module (the internal XJT)

Once you have the XJT firmware downloaded, you have two choices:

1.  Flash the XJT module using a FrSky USB upgrade dongle... I borrowed one from Fletch to do mine (thanks dude!)
2.  Upgrade to OpenTX 2.0+ and there';s a method of upgrading without the dongle.  It';s apparently easier but I wouldn';t know as I didn';t choose this method.

annikk.exe

OpenTX is the thing that controls the UI on the Taranis, and implements all the cool logic programming functions, sound effects, haptics and everything.  OpenTX is a firmware for the Taranis.

The XJT firmware on the other hand, is for the internal XJT module.  This is a device that is FrSky build right into the Taranis at the factory.  It';s responsible for controlling the actual radio transmitter inside the Taranis.  The XJT module is what implements the ACCST protocol that FrSky use.  The internal XJT module is NOT the same as an aftermarket external XJT module, which would normally be used in a different type of radio (eg Turnigy) in order to be able to bind to FrSky receivers.

Hope that explains it..
This confusions was the biggest stumbling block for me when I was fighting this battle you are now fighting.  So I thought it would be worth the time to try to explain it a bit better than my rushed posts above...

Alwischy

Thank you very much really appreciate it,i ordered the frsky usb dongle in preperation for flashing the D4R2 last week so will update you when it arrives.

Alwischy

Right i have all the gear now,but no idea
Does anyone wanna help a complete knob flash the internal xjt firmware on my taranis,i have read all the how to';s but they all seem to conflict each other. TIA
