Eachine CCD Camera

Having been using the Eachine 700TVL CMOS camera with their 200mW camera and vtx bundle I was keen on upgrading the camera. The VTX was good but the CMOS camera was pretty poor in dynamic range when pointing at bright sky/sun, the ground would become black and you couldnt make out arse from elbow..

I noticed a couple of weeks ago that BG started stocking an Eachine bundle with the same 200mW vtx but this time with a CCD camera. At £21 I couldn';t resist but to give it a whirl. So I compared the camera specs:

CMOS 700TVL:
Size - 32x32x23.5mm
FOV - 110deg Horizontal
Sensor - 1/3" CMOS
Resolution - 700 TVL
Weight - 12g

CCD 700TVL:
Size - 32x32x23.5mm
FOV - 148deg Horizontal
Sensor - Sony 1/3" CCD
Resolution - 700 TVL
Weight - 12g

The obvious difference is the FOV, for some reason there only seems to be a 148deg FOV version so far for the CCD camera, where as the CMOS has the choice of 110deg. So the FOV might be too wide for some FPV';rs out there. Other notable difference is the sensor (of course) the CCD is stated as a Sony sensor, where the CMOS sensor is not branded, this must be a good thing surely? Apart from that, size and weight are identical.

So i ordered one and it arrived last week. First impressions, same box VTX and antenna as the CMOS version, camera is obviously different, and the cable supplied is actually slightly different too in that the plug for the camera is different from the CCD version. So if like me you';re buying this to swap out the cameras, you have to change over the wiring too which isnt a very hard.

My only quibble with the camera board is all the exposed circuitry, on both sides too. This made it difficult to mount directly to my 250 Nighthawk as I didnt want them to contact the carbon plate. So I cut some small pieces of thin foam into shape for the front and back of the camera and taped around it with insulating tape to form a nice little ';protective'; case. Other than that, installation is simple, plug and play.

Down to the performance now. I';ve not yet flown with the new camera (due to it being wet or windy over this weekend) but initial comparison and tests in the house show much better results than the CMOS camera. Pointing it directly at the window in a dark room, with the CCD I can see everything in the room still even with the bright window, the CMOS I cant make out anything in the room.

I took a quick snap of the monitor to show you the CCD at work when pointed at the window in a reasonably shaded room. I will post again later with the CMOS comparison.

All in all though I think its definitely worth the extra few pennies to get the CCD version over the CMOS, thats of course if the FOV isnt an issue for you.

Nice carnt wait till you come back after a test flight . I';ve got the 700 tvl cmos and don';t like it one bit .
From the same bundal the rest is ok so far

I have one of those fitted at the moment and to be honest it doesn';t handle bright sunlight well at all! 

I';m not sure if I can connect an OSD and change any settings, but after yesterday';s session the first thing I did was order a better cam (found a Pixim Seawolf for £2o on ebay).

I may remove the crystal and use it to repair my Runcam PZ0420.  That thing may be twice the price, but it';s awesome!

Yep, the CCD version.  I';ll try to dig out the OSD remote for the Runcam and see if it fits - I doubt it, but you never know!

I have this camera and with it being the only one ive ever had I think its great  but maybe because I have nothing to compare it to, I mounted mine like in the pics below

It might be worth applying a bit of glue to the oscillator (Silver cylindrical thing) as they are prone to pull them selves off.

I';ve attached mine with Zip ties just at the bottom. So when i have a front end crash, the camera bends in and the frame takes the brunt.

I';m well miffed I have seen that camra reviewed by the Ozzie dud
And it';s quite good for the price mine has hardly eny components on it at all and its crap

Make sure you hot glue the crystal to the bourd so it doesn';t fall off that';s what I';ve seen done on a review
