Why a HEX not an OCT ?

Hi guys,

I';m moving on to a HEX but want to know why not an OCTO ?

Obviously the OCTO is 33% more expensive in parts than a HEX but are there any major benefits of an OCTO ?

I was happy with a quad until I lost an ESC and it fell out the sky like a brick, don';t like the idea of that really so want some redundancy.

Will I be happy with 6 or shall I go mad and get 8?

Will they ever do a 10????? oh god where will it end ?

Cheers,

Gib.

I suppose it depends on what your payload is?  If it';s a camera worth more than £2000, then I would plump for an octo!  I think although a hex does offer some redundancy, it is often in practice very limited, perhaps to a controlled ';crash'; landing, as opposed to an uncontrolled one!?  Whereas an octo might even finish the shoot, maybe?

Octo ... two more motors ... more energy used ... lower flight time ... needs higher S battery ... slower motors ... greater cost ...

Its a whole stack of trade-offs.  A hex will, allegedly, give you some more control than a total loss plunge to earth.  Some folk say that there is limited or no yaw, yet I';ve seen videos where one motor/prop failure has allowed the pilot to bring the aircraft back home in one piece.

I have recently started the migration of my larger multi-rotor to hex (520mm 550mm frame size) for exactly the reasons of some degree of resilience to single rotor arm failure.

I have had three failures so far due to some less than reliable ESC bought during the early part of my learning curve. On every occasion the hex was retreivable and flew very well considering its loss of motor ... The overwhelming thing that you must do is establish a good hover then carry out a controlled spiral dive then land !!! Most important thing is not to panic and lower throttle as this will surely end in tears !!! The naza V2 is very cacaple of sorting out 5 motor flight as long as you have a good deal of power in reserve !!!
