Depends how the firmware was written, if it was written a sensible manner then there would be a mavlink protocol module that simply accepts serial input and parses the data and then outputs the data that the osd code uses to generate the display.

However many enthusiastic people are not sensible and just have monolithic blocks of code (multiwii suffers from good ideas poorly implemented)

If its well written then it should be able to run with almost any flight controller with minimal work.

Not got my hands on one yet obviously but the way it seems to work is that the device listens to Mavlink messages which are then passed on to other modules or what he calls "Widgets". So a compass widget will take the compass data, the GPS widget takes GPS data and you just arrange them onscreen. He seems to actively want to encourage users to develop their own widgets later for others to use. He';s already talking of supporting OpenPilot in the future too.

BTW, this OSD has a really neat "Radar" widget that you can place on the home screen or larger on its own page with the traditional aircraft home arrow and a series of rings showing scale. As you move out from home the rings shrink and then rescale to the new distance, he says the next FW version will be able to overlay waypoints for those running auto missions. Looks very cool indeed especially as the resolution is much inreased over minimosd.

I';ve donated anyway (which gets me a board), I love projects like these (Teensy telemetry etc.) and support them however I can.

Well if he has gone modular then it could be good for everybody, though he may be in for arguements if more developers come on board.

It looks nice and it is something that FPV flyers need, a single go to device with good core functionality

The Naze is a perfect example of what can happen when different routes are taken.

Baseflight tc was dictatorial about coding style etc to try and keep it manageable (very few could actually bear to work with him)

Cleanflight Dominic welcomed developers and there are a lot of updates, but I hope Dominic can wield the ban hammer because once a certain type of coder turns up mayhem will ensue.
