now those do look small and look like they would fit nicely on the arms of a mini.

Phil, a question - if these are Opto then what is the purpose of the 3-wire signal/power/ground cable?  Can the +ve and Gnd be removed to light up and save weight etc?

I';m assuming that if there is a bootloader on board the 3 wires permit you to use the afro programming interface
Not much kit, but what I have I like

Is that right though?  Typically, conventionally, with the Afro at least, the advice is to remove the power wire and power the ESC via its own mains power wires.  To leave the power wire in may/will cause the ESC to blow or worse!

So wouldn';t the same apply to these? Or at least keep the Signal and Ground wires?

i removed them from my DJI opto';s, no point in them being there if they aren';t being used.

Some people report that leaving the signal and ground wire can give better results. If you leave the ground wire it helps totally eliminate the possibility of a ground loop affecting the signal.

As they are OPTO you can always remove the red wire to save a tiny bit of weight. I expect the only reason they';ve left the red wire is that they';ve sourced common 3 cable servo wires for the factory and haven';t bothered finding any with just signal and ground.

I';ve removed both red and black and they seem to be fine running from a servo tester, no stuttering or any other issues

Cheers

Leaving the black wire as well as the signal only helps in some situations with some wiring setups. Arducopter consider it best practice if you read their documentation but it';s probably not needed most of the time.

philtrum

on the mini apm there is only provision for the signal wire, i suppose you could ground all the negative and wire all the positives together to stop any loops

teslahed

That';s a good point actually. I think the mini APM isn';t an official design and if it was you would also be able to connect up the grounds.

But probably not worth worrying about on a smaller setup that doesn';t cost £1000s.
