El Cheapo Club: GS8000L Dash cam (Go pro alternative?)

Whilst in the chatroom a few days ago, Spinking shared a like for a dash cam on ebay.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161510654677

What got me was that it recorded 1080P at 30fps and had an AV out socket. Av out you say?? Hmmmmm :hmm:

Cost? Well you can get these from £17-20 but there are many others for auction starting at 0.99p. To cut a long story short, I got mine for £16.50. It arrived today!

I can verify that it IS live av out. There is a minimal delay but thats to be expected. The picture quality is not bad either considering I was testing it in a poorly lit office. I';m gonna put an SD card in it when i get home later and give it a decent test and post the results.

Maybe this could be a poor man';s Go Pro alternative?

Here';s a quick vid I took this arvo. I';m going to tweak some settings later and give it another go.

First impression is that the AV out is much smoother than it';s recording.

Excellent display of these devices capability.  I bought a £10 one a while back, but it ended up in the car and not what I had intended - being stripped down for mounting in a mini H-quad for FPV/recording.

If you';re finding the video recording a bit jerky then try a faster SD card if possible.  I try to use Class 10 where possible. The ultra cheap Class 4 are rarely suitable for video recording.  Maybe Class 8 as a minimum.

On my way back from my little one';s checkup today, I was thinking the same thing. The card I was using a 2GB jobby that is x years old. I need to purchase some new micro SD cards anyway so will make sure they are class 10. Will make the next test a bit fairer.

I got this and thought what a great buy it was:
But that';s stupid cheap! I know that the sj4000 is very well regarded so went for it, oh well c';est la vie!

EBuyer is doing 16GB class 10 MicroSD for £7 at the moment.

Hey Tups, just thinking on that video you took.  You probably shouldn';t publish it.  Altitude too low, near vehicles, houses, roads and people not under your control.  You';ll have the CAA on your tail mate ::)

Well, I got finally got my sd card and some how managed to get hold of an SJ4000 as well. This is how they both perform at night. Both at filming at 1080p 30fps.

I';ve got a couple of the GS8000L dashcams(one for me and one for my wife),we have had them for about 3 months, they are adequate for dashcams (not great at night where there are no streetlights) but I wouldn';t use one for a multirotor, the batteries only last 15 minutes or so and the quality isn';t that spectacular. They would however provide good evidence to your insurer in  the event of a car crash lol.

tupoar

I';m interested to see the video out on the dashcam. It could possibly work if you';re just using the live video. I agree on the battery though, charges up in under 10 minutes and I only just made it home in that video before the low battery alert came up.

I';ve done another video this morning which I';ll post later when i get home. brighter condition this time (and I cleaned the lens';s beforehand  :embarrassed)

I';ve just quickly reviewed the video from this morning. The quailty from the SJ4000 is on a completely different level to the dashcam.

So I take it that the GS8000 wasn';t the better camera despite the number that is twice as large as the SJ.  Proving that old adage, bigger isn';t always better.
