Can any one shed any light please on the approval of interconnect between something built for sale in the UK

You buy a number of parts to build something to sell in the UK all the parts a ce marked. When you connect it all together with cables that you have made up on the bench.

You sell this finished product. at what point does the CE mark need re applying.

I recently had something tested for CE at Rowland Lab';s and they could not help me with that question. Anyone?.....

I design heating appliances for the leisure home industry so have to be familiar with the directive; I use this for reference mostly:
http://www.ce-marking.org/what-is-ce-marking.html
We buy in CE marked parts but when they are used in an assembly the whole appliance has to go through the approvals relevant to the product before we are allowed to CE mark the appliance; under certain circumstances for example when the appliance has a decorative change we are allowed to self certify that product.

No manufactures in the UK then?

I have looked hard to try find the state of play. It';s a veritable mine field.

A couple of places spring to mind, BSI group Bureau Veritas and

IES are pretty good!

I';m a bit late to this so maybe you have what you need - but just in case I';ve put some pointers below. Without knowing the context of the question its hard to frame a response so I';ve done a bit of a brain dump. Some of the links are to show what type of support is available although they may not apply to your product - others should. I hope what is below is more helpful that confusing.

In a past life I had responsibility for product safety and CE marking for machinery that included electrical and electronic components by the way.

As far as CE marking goes, it really depends on exactly what your product is, and what its intended purpose is, to decide exactly which directives apply. If it has moving parts, it may be a Machine so 2006/42/EC would apply - probably as well as other directives. Once you know which directives apply, the processes that must apply to the design, manufacture and technical documentation in order for the product to be eligible for a CE mark (and usually a Declaration of Conformity) will be described. Some directives, e.g. the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC also have a guidance document issued by the European Commission.

All of the directives are available free of charge for the European commission website.
http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/sectors/electrical/index_en.htm

HSE and DTI provide guidance to industry.
http://www.hse.gov.uk/work-equipment-machinery/european-community-law-supply-new-products.htm
https://www.gov.uk/electrical-equipment-manufacturers-and-their-responsibilities

Another buzz-phrase you may have come across is Notified Bodies. A Notified Body is a commercial organisation that sometimes must be involved in the approval process. In any event they would be able to provide advice.
http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/sectors/electrical/documents/emc/notified-bodies/index_en.htm

It may be necessary to consider Harmonised Standards - the respective directives will define the relationship between the directive and the standards.
http://ec.europa.eu/enterprise/policies/european-standards/harmonised-standards/electromagnetic-compatibility/index_en.htm

Another place to go may be an industry group or trade association for your sector.

Other directives not associated with CE marking may apply, for example is your product is marketed to consumers? See HSE link.
And not forgetting WEEE, REACH and RoHS.
