All wooden V-tail quad. Bat bone style

Hi all.
Have had a couple of questions about the flyer in my avatar so here is a little note about it.

It started with me browsing the flite test youtube channel where I found the Bat bone tricopter. Then when David W made it in to a V-tail I was sold on it. Then I found some drawings on the plates for it in the FT forums and decided to have a go on the build ;).
I cut the plates out of some cheap 3mm ply I had around and got some 15mm pine wood for arms. The motors are XXD 2212 930KV ones turning 1045 props. ESC´s are XXD 30A. I had a KK2.0 board and put that on with some custom RC911 sw onboard. OrangeRx 6-ch Rx to be controlled by my Dx6i. Battery are 3S 2200mAh. I used some motor mounts from the HK X525 on the arms. The rear mounted in a 40 degree angle.

Some pics of the build:

Looking good.

Easier to orientate as well. ~~

i like it ive almost finished a 450 H quad from wood and alloy and was thinking what next , i might build one of these
what are the dimensions ?
nice job

Here is a link to a PDF with the drawings. They are made for cutting in G10. I just used the top and bottom plate and did not cut all the grooves and stuff

Dimensions are MtoM front 54 cm, MtoM rear 29cm. Frame diagonal is 60cm so quite big. 3mm ply for plates and 15x15mm arms

cheers m8 for the drawings very handy,  its quite big, i like big you can see what way round the damn thing is,

what is g10? fibre glass?  i think i would use ply as well  i would have trouble cutting  much else,

i flew my diy quad to day and had a hard landing and the damn cheap 3mm ply splintered and broke

mine is in  this forum http://www.multi-rotor.co.uk/index.php?topic=12785.0 take a peek if you like all welcome

Yep, G10 is fiber glass. There are files for cutting on a CNC also for this. Have seen your build. Nice one ~~

ah yes i found g10 now i dont think i could cut it any sence  i dont have access to a cnc , (well i do but the setting up fees are 40 quid a hour and it takes two hours)
thanks for looking at mine  , im trying to decide what to build next a v tail or a tri have you built a tri before? if so which is more fun to fly hel?

I can answer that for you mate, a tri is the most fun to fly but a Vtail is very close in terms of agility plus it doesn';t have a servo to be concerned about.
Take a look at this:

It';s a bit long but you will appreciate what I mean.

I think Darrell said what´s needed... ~~

Haven´t built a tri yet but I might, some day.... ;)

WOW thank you ,great display of flying if can do half that i would be more than happy,  that  v tail is far more  nimble than i was expecting ,lol and i do note the cable tied motors  D and had a laugh to my self

tell me do those motors with the thin shafts and Collette  tend to bend on impact? seems like they would verses the ones you sent me or dys type motors

looking a those simple copters mine is maybe a bit over engineered

cheers m8

It';s just a different way of designing  your model,  the Simple copter philosophy is to provide a model that has intentional weak points that are easy and cheap to fix, this is something that I really like  and think that for most people especially in the learning stages is the best.

forest

yes agreed my the folding arms and cable ties on that first woody saved me plenty in broken parts and the same for the woody-alloy only one crash so far,( ive got much better) i come home with no damage  now  hardly a prop yay! although im not dodging trees yet which is one of my aims

when first learning , a quad that cost hundreds of quid is not needed and a bit daft as my oppo and his blade350 has found out 5 frames in five flights now we are on no 5 ive been fixing it with a soldering  iron they are so brittle!
i wont mention the blade i had 5 flights and a 300 hole in my pocket (damn RTH)

sorry op we have gone off track a bit here i hope you dont mind

Sorry to report this one is no longer a flyer.... Was practicing some flips and stuff and it went down. Broke the top frame plate, split a rear boom. landing gear and a prop broke too. Will put the electronics on a spare F450 frame so I can practice the flips some more......

I think that you would have better durability  if you  used Birch faced ply for the plates and Poplar for the  arms (if you want to keep it all wood).

This was just built from scrap wood I had lying around as a test build together with my son. I think it will be G10 plates with alu or CF arms when I build a new one. It was fun to fly so i will build one again ;), just have to learn the flips first.....

cant you make those front arms folding ? its just a case of a pivot bolt you can then crash as much as you like!!

I had them foldable but the torque from 10" props made them want to fold in mid air so I secured them with zip ties. Don';t think that would have saved anything this time though since it went down flat when I tried to do some flips....
